The other child is a neighbor who has behavioral issues, yet their parents really "put on a production" including a stretch limo and a trip to a concert. When our own daughter's 9th birthday party shortly came around, she just wanted a small group (5) of friends from her school that she picked herself. Things were going great until the other child's mother confronted our child's party and asked them to "go inside" due to the pyschologocial torment that could be caused to her little miscreant. She went on to rail at our 9-year old daughter about how disappointed she was in her mother (my wife) who had "excluded" her daughter. Her daughter can really be quite difficult -- mean, actually. Looking back, we probably should have graciously declined the other's invite, but our daughter is very social, and it was hard to say "no." It seems to me that the neighbor Mom's protective instincts for her daughter cause her to ignore bad behavior and punish us all. Where did we go wrong?

I know that we're supposed to respect our elders. But why is it that some of our elders won't respect those younger than them in return? I've been on the receiving end of a number of elderly people who were really rude! I always thought respect was a two-way street.

Do you reply to something that was written on the wall and then come back a few days later to see if they replied back to your reply?

Long story, but I finally feel I can't deal with "normal" jobs much longer. Am no oil painting, but "brush up well", am loving and giving, my partner is permanently impotent and I need money, to put it bluntly. If I can keep it from my daughter, is there any reason why not? I mean violence, really, past caring re the moral side.

I bought a very nice, non-stick baking sheet/pan, and since a pair of roommates moved in, they destroyed it. They scraped off the non-stick sheen and burnt it to a crisp. They cut into it with knives and pizza cutters. I think what they've done is so juvenile, because they couldn't keep it decent while they were using it, especially since it wasn't even theirs. How could they treat other people's things like this? I've left notes for them to stop, but it's too late. The pan is shot. Should I ask them to compensate me for it, even though they could easily say I did the damage over time too? Or should I just take their pans? The last statement was more of a joke. I don't feel like it's fair that I have to go buy a new pan because of their negligence.

If they are sure they've been charmed by meeting the person, just saying "i'm charmed" is confirmation enough. Any other dumb responses you'd care to contribute ?

I just bought an ivory colored dress with a black sash for my friends upcoming wedding (it's a traditional Indian ceremony and reception) without even thinking about the fact that it is white. I'm planning on wearing it with black tights, red shoes, and a black wrap. I just wanted to see if the fact that it is an Indian wedding changes people's feelings about the appropriateness of wearing white. Thanks!

I went to a pizza buffet last night with a friend of mine. I asked for a booth because I don't do well with regular wooden chairs because of my size. However, none were available. As soon as I sat in the flimsy chair, it broke. Now the owner wants me to pay for it. I don't think I should have to because I asked for a booth. What do you think? I want to do the right thing,

nicely, that I dont want the winter coat she got me. Its actually my fault. My mom told me to tell her what I wanted for my B-day and she would get it. Well I fell in love with this gorgeous winter coat. Anyway she bought it wrapped it and gave it to me. Now-when I got it home I was reading the materials and read that the trim was FOX FUR. I do not wear fur- how can I wear something that I fight against? That makes me a hypocrite. Long story short I refuse to wear it and dont want to hurt her feelings...any advice please?

Rabid colleague?
we were working a project which we had to talk about in class.I just said that our presentation should be better than the group who were rebuked by the teacher for doing a lousy job of it.One of my group members has gone & told the other group about it.Now the group members are trying to get back at me.They keep coughing at the sight of me.They reduce the temperature of the AC wherever I sit and laugh at my discomfort. They are dogging me.

It is difficult to ignore and I am really angry.Since it is non-verbal ,I can't ask them directly.Nobody would believe me either.

My husband and I were married in September in PA. We live in MI and his family is from there, but I come from PA (family lives there still). My family follows some rules of etiquette that my husband's family disregards or does not think appropriate to follow, and in regards to this situation, I see where both families are coming from. Our families do not see much of one another because of the distance, but eventually we would like to have children and I want to clear this up before that happens.

Both sets of parents met on previous occasion. At the rehearsal and dinner, neither set talked to one another--same thing ALL through the wedding weekend. I went sure to thank EACH guest individually. My family hosted the wedding and even paid for the rehearsal dinner. Friend/Maid of Honor from affluent family says it was up to his family (visitors) to thank the hosts, but folks in Michigan think it's up to the hosts to make visitors feel welcome. I think all acted immature.

What should I do?
