I bought a very nice, non-stick baking sheet/pan, and since a pair of roommates moved in, they destroyed it. They scraped off the non-stick sheen and burnt it to a crisp. They cut into it with knives and pizza cutters. I think what they've done is so juvenile, because they couldn't keep it decent while they were using it, especially since it wasn't even theirs. How could they treat other people's things like this? I've left notes for them to stop, but it's too late. The pan is shot. Should I ask them to compensate me for it, even though they could easily say I did the damage over time too? Or should I just take their pans? The last statement was more of a joke. I don't feel like it's fair that I have to go buy a new pan because of their negligence.

I'm thinking you need new roommates. That may be throwing out the baby with the bathwater, but if they have that little respect for the cooking utensils, what else have they destroyed? Next time you get roommates, make it clear what is expected in the way of care -- before you let them move in. And I wouldn't buy a new pan until this batch of gunk has moved out!

they will buy the next 1?
no i don't think ur being unreasonable or trivial.
they obviously have had a pandered 2 existence up until now, don't fall 4 it and replace ur baking sheet or pans.
it's their flipping turn,
when they inevitably trash it, they'll have 2 replace it again.
in time they may get the message that unless u use care with things, it can get expensive!

if u need 2 cook anything requiring a baking sheet & they haven't replaced the trashed utensils,
buy food wisely and stick 2 stuff u know will bake happily on folded tin-foil.
and discard once ur done.

I've had this issue. I pointed it out to the girl and had her give me the money for another one AND didn't let her use it afterwards because she couldn't be bothered to remember. They did give you a security deposit? You can always take it out of that and write them up a receipt (keep a copy for yourself.)

I also have NO metal spatulas or large cooking spoons. Folks shouldn't be using knives on metal anyway~ it dulls the edge.

Do not be afraid to lay down the law~ roommates will do whatever they can get away with. I'd let them know using your things is a priveledge they are in danger of losing.

From this question I can tell you the biggest reason people get into endless conflicts that they are annoyed with. I made this distinction when I was in college (lots of annoying room mates) and maybe it will help you:
On a scale of one to ten rate how important it is to you to be vindicated for this incident.
On a scale of one to ten rate how petty, boring and useless it will be to get into the argument, the compensation process and so on.
Whichever is higher go with that one (if the second is higher don't bother with the argument, if the first is higher do).
Once you have made a decision deal with the consequences. If you choose the first one, don't get mad at how boring and annoying it is to try and get them to take responsibility and if you go with not confronting them don't hold a resentment and get passive aggresive later.
The reason people get into conflicts that they are annoyed with is a)They often pick battles that really aren't worth it or
b)They avoid the conflict but hold the resentment.
c)They make the mistaken assumption that it is possible to control other's behavior.
good luck!

I would use their pans and not even buy another one because they will probably destroy it aswell. Destroy theirs, who cares they probably wont. Dont be to anal..just use their pans, and keep anythign you want kept in good condition packed away and in your room. Personally I have lived with people who were very respectful of my stuff and clean and never so disrespectful to my stuff but tehre are all kinds and your roomates are juvineille so complaining over stuff that can be avoided will probably not add any fuel to their fire. Good luck, roomates suck,.

If you are talking about cheap pans from Wal-mart, that is what happens to them. Get over it and do not get upset about it. Get a new $5 pan and do not let them use it. If it is an expensive one, then ask them to replace it.

show them the pan and very nicely tell them that u are disappointed at what they have done... then tell them that u would like for the, to buy u a new pan to make up for what they have done.

It sounds like you need to find new roommates. You obviously are more meticulous and mature than these two, and it will only be a matter of time before they ruin or break something else.

that is just how it goes when you live with roomates. think of all the money you have saved on rent by living with them. so take the savings and go buy a new pan. just make it a point to tell them that if they cant use it right than dont use it at all. life is too short to get hung up on little stuff like this.
