Thanks for that niceperson, i was really concerned that if i dared to eat my food with cutlery in both hands those around me would think i was too cultured (as i believe its how most of the civilised world eats).... its not that im some kind of hillbilly just dragged from the pig-pen, i was hoping that someone who attended Kings College Cambridge could pre-warn me of any unusual traditions i may encounter. You didnt mention what i should do if i need to fart? should i let it out loud and proud or simply blame the person next to me?

It is perfectly acceptable to ask your sponsor about any unique customs. In general, good table manners, respectful conversation and dress are appropriate. The specifics largely depend on the type of dinner you will attend. If it is a small, private affair, then one acts as one might at any dinner party. If it is a public feast then there may be additional considerations according to the traditions of the institution.

I recommend reading De Brett's Guide to Modern Etiquette for a detailed discussion of dinner-related manners. It is the de facto standard for British gentlemen.

Have a nice neat haircut done by a very good hairstylist for starters. Wear a conservative dark sports jacket, such as dark navy blue with a crest. and plain tan/khaki pants. Whear a staartched and pressed white shirt with a button down collar. Wear a brown belt, dark brown socks, a new looking dark brown loafers. No cologne but do shower before dressing. Wait to eat until the person at the head of the table begins eating. Immediately upon sitting down put your napkin in your lap. Do not rest your hands or elbows on the table at all. Eat with one hand only while keeping your other hand in your lap. Chew with your mouth closed. Say "How do you do?" when you are introduced to someone. Say "Willyou please excuse me?" if you need to get up from the table. It's hard to givey ou a childhood's worth of manners here on the internet in Yahoo Answers, but this is a start.

I think the first answer to this question is good. Also, remember that you can always watch the people around you and do what they are doing.
