It just depends on your culture... for most of the Western world, it is looked upon as rude, or insulting to wear a hat or head covering inside. I don't know why. But if you are Jewish, it is required that you wear something on your head if you enter the synagogue, for instance. I also see that Muslime women must always wear something covering their heads as well, and some Christian sects like to see their men and women cover their heads as a sign of respect.
So, I can't really justify the request or requirement that men uncover their heads, but rather suggest that it is a cultural thing.

It is so rude when men (and women) keep their hats on - especially the casual ball caps?!! People who have never been inside a ball stadium think it is sooo cool to wear a ball cap for some reason. Last Christmas a friend turned up with her new fiance to a dinner party that had taken the hostess hours to prepare. The guy sat down in the dining room with his ball cap on and the hostess (her aunt) took her aside and suggested that $$$ might remove his cap) She was nonplussed and said , "Oh he has dirty hair because he was running for an hour so the cap probably looks better." This is an annual event , day after Christmas, family and friends, everyone dressing up! By keeping on the cap, this guy made it clear that it was more important to sleep in late and run for an hour than to shower for a nice dinner! And that example is what men wearing caps indoors conveys - "I am more important than you are, my time is more valuable than yours, I am in a big hurry to leave and could care less about being here." As for the females who wear ballcaps - the only time this might be acceptable is waking up late, realizing you're out of tampons and having to rush to corner store before your shower. Do the "celebrity coverup" - add big sunglasses and a ballcap. But then, for Gawdzsakes, shower and wash your hair. a shower, hair wash, rinse and towel dry takes less than 6 minutes in a pinch. Surely you are worth 6 minutes to yourself to take this time. PS-have to add that the backwards-ballcaps is the most ridiculous fad ever to occur. Even though it's waaaaay outdtaed, some guys still think it's coo. If they knew how stupid they looked ..well, let's admit it here, they aren't "gettin' any" dressed like that!

It is more about tradition than justification. If a group of people are insulted by an act then it is probably best not to commit the act. I'm from the South and went to school in Europe for half a year. I answered a question by a middle aged lady in the affirmative by saying, "Yes, Mam" and she was highly insulted. Apparently, in her culture a Mam was a woman of ill repute.

It doesn't show an effort was made to look good and fix your hair for the person you are meeting with.

And in a restaurant because usually a hat keeps light away from your face it's like a cover up sometimes for people a way of going unnoticed and if you have nothing to hide you should let your face be exposed nicely.

Wearing hats indoors is rude and those who do it have no respect. We go to nice restaurants where you will see a family and the teenage boy is wearing a baseball cap sideways.

when men wear hats indoors its for a few things.
1. they are armed.(police on duty)
2. they are armed and have not come in peace.(insult to the host)
3. they are on duty(like the paper hats at fast food places)
4. theyre not staying long(insults your host)
5. the indoor location is deemed not comfortable or warm enough to take off your hat(insult to the host)

It implies they are ready to leave and have somewhere better to be. If you come to Texas and wear a hat indoors, someone's 80 year old grandmother is bound to try to knock your head off. Very disrespectful down here.

It is out of respect to the owner. You take your cover off indoors for respect. In the military, the only person who can wear a cover indoors is the military police. It is to show they are "on duty"

Because historically men wore hats as protection in time of battle. So wearing it in doors was showing to the owner of the house that you are not relaxed, but expecting battle. By taking it off you are showing that you are relaxed. So it has become a custom and let not our unhallowed hands offend the course of etiquette over hundreds of years.

While we're on it, I thought the double standard indicated it's okay for a woman to keep her hat on indoors, as well as remain seated while extending her hand for a handshake. Not that I do either, but there are RULES, um?
