I just bought an ivory colored dress with a black sash for my friends upcoming wedding (it's a traditional Indian ceremony and reception) without even thinking about the fact that it is white. I'm planning on wearing it with black tights, red shoes, and a black wrap. I just wanted to see if the fact that it is an Indian wedding changes people's feelings about the appropriateness of wearing white. Thanks!

The etiquette for not wearing white to a traditional American wedding is based on the fact that the bride is anticipated to be wearing white, and the color has been reserved for her to make her stand out on her special day. If cultural differences don't dictate that the bride wears a certain color, then don't worry about it. Just wear something that still puts the focus on the bride on her special day. Also, with the current trend of brides choosing to wear colors as they wish, I'd say that white was fair game for any wedding - the color that should be avoided is whatever color the bride chooses to wear.

You are wearing enough colors that it is fine--you are not all dressed in white.

Then, is the bride wearing a white wedding dress, or is she wearing a traditional Indian dress? The two traditional Indian weddings I have been to, the bride did not wear a ''traditional'' western white wedding dress.

Here in America, it is not appropriate to wear white at a wedding. However, if it is a traditional wedding based upon another culture, then follow that culture's traditions.

Its Ivory, not white. And you have other colors mixed in. Can't be as bad as my mother and my mother in-law going out and accidently buying identical dresses for our wedding.

White would be the wrong color to wear to someone elses wedding. Its not your big day so you wouldnt want to over shadow the bride, it would be bad form

The fiancèe chooses her dress for that occasion, but you are only invited so is ok.
