Lots of elders seem to think that the whole world owes them something. Once they reach a certain age they think that gives them the right to say and do whatever they want. Also age becomes a regressive thing, they become child like in lots of ways hence they are more like spoiled brats, whining and complaining and just being rude. Most are embarrassing to be around because of their sudden outbursts of rudeness towards other people.

Just because people get old doesn't mean they become wiser.
Some can be just as nasty as they were when they were younger.
yes we are told to respect our elders. and in my book i do.
Until they either rip me off, take advantage of my kind generous manner.
or they are rude..
Then if they can sling it at you ...
I'm sure they can take it back.
I would just point out the obvious.
I have been ripped off by a lady 40 years older than myself.
I thought she was a lovely old dear, and if she needed something done around the house i felt it would be easier if i did it, to save her money and of course energy as she couldn't do it.
Little did i know this lady was stealing from me and using me.
I am not as trusting today.

It's like the question of "what came first? The chicken or the egg". In order to receive respect, you have to give it. But who starts first? The youth or the elder? Good question here. But I don't have the answer. I too, however, have been subject to rudeness by many elders.

I observe the same thing. I feel the older one is in the position to model for the younger. I'm disappointed in some of my relatives as well as the public at large.
My practice of displaying respect isn't contingent on whether someone else is being kind. We each have the responsibility to do right by each other in all settings.

You're absolutely right. I doubt they mean to be and many are trying to pass on what they've learned in a long lifetime. Some are in pain, scared and unwanted. I used to have a very elderly friend who felt it was her duty to tell me what to do. I was in a major trauma when she started in and I said simply, "I don't need criticism." It worked.

i agree respect is a two way street....
i start by giving everyone the benefit of the doubt....but if they prove disrespectful, then that's what they get in return

That's because you listen to crap philosophers like Ophra. Everything in this world is not an equal trade-off just so YOU can have "good self esteem" and "closure". You know whats right, so quit being a typical whiner.

Just because you're old, it doesn't mean you were raised right, or have any class...
