More active members of the military died during two years of peacetime in the early 1980s than died during a two-year period of war in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to a government report.

The Congressional Research Service, which compiled war casualty statistics from the Revolutionary War to present day conflicts, reported that 4,699 members of the U.S. military died in 1981 and '82 — a period when the U.S. had only limited troop deployments to conflicts in the Mideast. That number of deaths is nearly 900 more than the 3,800 deaths during 2005 and '06, when the U.S. was fully committed to large-scale military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The CRS, which is the public policy research arm of Congress, issued its findings in the June report "American War and Military Operations Casualties: Lists and Statistics."

FOXNews.com, in re-examining the findings, found that — surprising as it may be — there were more active duty deaths in some years of peacetime than there were i

The Draft to War
What positions are there in the military if you get drafted?
How does it work?
Do you think it might be put into affect soon?
(If it ever comes into affect, I am going to Canada :D
Not because I am a coward but I don't like to kill and don't want to kill)
What are your ideas on a military draft?
Do we need it?
I am just a curious person about other peoples thoughts and ideas :)
Oh ummmm
Do you have to sign something for a draft and you get a draft card and when your number is pulled then you go to war?
Not sure how this works please clear this up for me :)

The mantra of the pro-war crowd is that the U.S. military must fight terrorists in the Middle East so that they can not attack us here. Given that a terrorist attack typically requires very few people to pull it off, why does the presence of our military in the Middle East assure that they will not attack U.S. civilians in America?

They are not soldiers. They are civilians. They are supposedly their for defense. If it found their shooting were unjustified, should they be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law like anyone else who murders?

Aside from the question, I'll make it known that I think Blackwater should not be in Iraq, unless private companies are hiring them. I do not believe that the government should ever employ mercenaries as a way to avoid using the citizenry to fight its wars. If the citizens do not want to fight, then perhaps the government should not start the war. It is after all the citizens government isn't it?

Will all of the deaths in the Iraq War be worth it if in the future Iraq is free and safe? If all of those people have have the chance to be free and safe like we as Americans are, will the war have been worth it? How much is your freedom worth to you? What would you be willing to do to insure your children and grandchildren grow up free?

i am joining the guard in 2weeks. i initially wanted to go for a skilled trade mos (electrician, plumbing), later on i was told that those jobs have more of a deployment and fatality rate than infantry.

granted, infantry is my third choice. but i just wanted to know if there is any truth to this....i just wouldnt think that a skilled trade mos would be as frontline, if anything i would think that they would be on base more.

i have no issue with deployment (i know it is part of the terrortory), but this just seemed strange to me.

For those who know, I'm investigating the benefits in each branch of the Military. Yesterday, I participated in an online chat with an Air Force recruiter and was seriously disappointed with his lack of enthusiasm for his branch, and drive to "sell" it to me.
I'm a College Grad with interest in intelligence, strategy, military history or PERHAPS pilot/nav. positions. My father is retired Army (Col.) and helping me a bit, but would appreciated any informed suggestions.
Thanks!

I just learnt all about it and I am shocked. America cut off cuba from the rest of the world? Why? Is it because of Castro? I dont think so I think they want to own Cuba!
Cuba relied on imported food and imported oil like most countries once they were cut off the average Cuban lost 20kg or something like that. America left them to die doesn't care for the fellow men, won't let other countries help them even fair trade with them! YET THEY HAVE A NAVAL BASE GUANTANAMO BAY on their f@#$%*! land?
thats rude if you ask me!
What do you reckon?

The war on Iraq has now killed more civilians than were killed in the attacks on September 11. Iraqis are bombed in their homes, have their cars shot up by mercenaries, have their houses raided and their lives controlled by the US military. Is this terrorism?

First go to Afganistan to capture UBL, who isn't there.
Next go to Iraq to find WMD's which aren't there.
Next to Iran because of a nuclear weapons industry that doesn't exist.

Like all good magicians, keep the peoples attention misdirected so they don't pay attention to what you don't want them to see.

What do you think about how the USA is being run?

Try this little experiment at home, in the outdoors, with enough
access to lots of sand so you can douse the flames.

Make a little steel bridge, with bricks under each end holding
up a long, thin piece of steel (you can use a thin steel bar, or
flat section, or a steel ruler).

Put a few bricks or dead weights at the middle of the span of
that bridge, to heavily load it, just to the point where if you add
more weight, the bridge would buckle up and collapse.

Like this: (ignore the dots)

............BB
_________________... (thin steel)
BB........fire.........BB..

(B = Bricks)

Then put a big metal tray of kerosene or aviation grade jet fuel
under those central bricks, and light it up with burning piece
of cardboard or newspaper to create a big fire (like a bonfire).

Now wait to see what happens.

Does the bridge collapse due to the heat of the fire?

You could also try this fire experiment with a vertical steel
column that is very heavily loaded.
