I just learnt all about it and I am shocked. America cut off cuba from the rest of the world? Why? Is it because of Castro? I dont think so I think they want to own Cuba!
Cuba relied on imported food and imported oil like most countries once they were cut off the average Cuban lost 20kg or something like that. America left them to die doesn't care for the fellow men, won't let other countries help them even fair trade with them! YET THEY HAVE A NAVAL BASE GUANTANAMO BAY on their f@#$%*! land?
thats rude if you ask me!
What do you reckon?

look for all those people who answered thank you . but I don't pretend to be an expert on the subject, I just read about it and wanted to know more I did not expect to be abused!
I'm from Australia and I am so far away from the rest of the world unless your interested in a lot of worldly topics it doesn't affect me too much! I just wanted to learn more and it seems to me that people are very touchy about it!
I don't believe people are bad but governments can be! Why should Cubans die or any people die because of their government. I bet most Cubans are lovely nice people I wouldnt want to harm you.

This is good because even if you don`t have the story 100%
right at least you`ve thought about it and come to the conclusion that any person not devoid of compassion would come to that these sanctions are wrong
over a million Iraqis starved to death from the 10 years of sanctions on Iraq from the west ,well over half were small children .This is what sanctions are about ,punishing helpless people because of the actions of their government , no matter how much our governments like to play the innocent party

You just learned of the "blockade" which was instituted by JFKennedy in the 60's? WOW!
The Cubans did not lose 20 kilos because of the US "blockade". Same as thousands of them did not get a bullet in the head because of the US "sanctions"- but because of Castro and his gang.
The land under the naval base in Guantanamo is leased by the US, and the US regularly pays the rent. The deal dates from before the Castro takeover, but it seems it was written by a good lawyer- for once!
BTW the average Cuban has nothing to say about the matter. Castro is definetly not going to ask them what they would want.
Also- the US does not "forbid" other countries or companies from trading with Cuba. It simply states that every person or company should make a choice- trade with Cuba or trade with the US
The US does not blockade Cuba. Cuba is perfectly free to buy their food and oil from whoever they want - and they have been doing that for years. On the down side, Cuban economy is in the dumps- but that is the effect of Cuban idiotic economic policies and not US "sanctions". Also Cuba spent zilions on exporting the "revolution"- even all the way to Ethiopia, where Cuban mercenaries murdered Ras Tafari- the Emperor Haile Selassie. One of the thousands.
To sum up- no, I do not think it is a bad thing that the US refuses to support a murderous Cuban regime - which actively tries to enslave people at home and abroad.
I only wish it treated some other regimes in the same manner.

Cuba Embargo: Yes, about 45 years and running. Good question, since you'll never get the truth from any American history book in public school. The reason Castro formed a rebellion was because US richclass industry owned and built huge industry in Cuba, much of it agricultural but also other. Workers were exploited at low wages and not offered quality of life improvements. When Castro successfully ousted the American puppet government in Cuba, he confiscated the land "deeded" to US richclass industry and redistributed it to the poor and exploited Cuban people. The reason for the embargo - and the reason for not discontinuing the embargo - is because those US richclass corporations (and US richclass land bankers) still demand to have their Cuban "deeded" land returned to them. There you have it. It has nothing to do with any philosophical issues, or human rights, or contracts with Russia, or anything equally benign. It's about US richclass corporate "claimed" money and land (but also with a little bruised pride). No US president has proven able to work past the US richclass corporate machine in order to have these land losses written off, and to renew trade with Cuba.

well now I'm confused i learned about the US embargo along time ago and never knew we won't let anyone else trade with them. some one should tell all the countries that trade with them to stop their breaking the rules.
yes we have a naval base there too. one that we legally operate through a lease with Cuba. you need to do some research on the subject before you go off half ****** again.

its a communist country. yeah i think the US wants to take over the world. but i believe that if Cuba became a republican country we might be able to help.hell i don't know. but i think Castro is a big reason Cuba has been left out there on its own for a while. you need to do some research and look at the situations from as many views as possible. I'm sure there's a lot of reasons and opinions as well as myths and facts.

America cut them off because Russia had missiles on cuba directed at them during the cold war, however they only agreed to Russia doing this because Cuba being communist, the USA had already restricted imports to cuba and had stopped trading with them altogether.
I agree that sanctions was necessary in the 80's and shortly after the cold war but seeing as it ended 20 years ago, the soviet union is dead and Cuba is a piss poor country still driving 1950's cars I think its about time America grew up a bit and lifted the sanctions.

The US does business with much more unsavory characters than Fidel Castro on a daily basis.
The embargoes are kept in place for political reasons.
Remember the 2000 election? How close it was?
Neither party wants to alienate the Cuban ex-pat community in Florida or else they will lose their votes. They believe that once Castro dies that they can go in and reclaim the land and assets that were confiscated during the revolution (unlikely).
Kind of weird of such a minority of people can affect policies for so long.
If they opened up Cuba to trade, Castro would have been gone decades ago.
But of course, I am Canadian and enjoy spending my New Year's in Havana. Lovely country with no Americans, paradise.
Edit:
Also, if you interested in American efforts to halt trade by other countries in Cuba, take a look at the Helms-Burton Act
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helms-Burton_Act
It is full of punitive actions that the US govt can take against foreign companies but has met a whole lot of resistance.

We do not keep other nations from trading with Cuba. We do complain about those nations knowingly buying stolen US property from the Cuban government.
We do complain about how those nations prop up a repressive dictator because it is profitable.
If you really cared about the Cuban people - you would be agitating for them to reform their government.
And I bet if we did loosen the trade restrictions - you would be complaining about us trading with a brutal dictator.

I think several thousand Cuban refugee's in South Florida would not agree with you. Many have lost family members, had their wives and daughters raped by Castro's thugs he calls an army.
I might also note that you would be shot for posting a question about Castro had you been in Cuba.
