I've read/heard many tales over the years of real and imagined incidents from WWII; this is the first time I've encountered this one. What's your source?

That sounds very doubtful... It would be a miracle if the government didn't detain him, much less normal civilians see him.

i don't know for sure but the world was not PC back then and I doubt his survival would have been guaranteed.besides who would have vollenteered for that job?
