Did any U.S. soldiers leave their regiment in order to join Iraqis insurgent forces ?

There was actually one case of an attack by a muslim extremist who used to be a military soldier. The guy tossed a grenade into a tent filled with men he'd trained with... people who's families he knew. Yeah, sure, and the rest of the world calls us Americans heartless...

anyway if the were U.S. soldiers, or former US Soldiers,
how could they become Iraqis??
