HAHAHA, well, I dont recommend you take a whole lot. A toothbrush and minimal personal hygiene items. A religious guide book is acceptable and even pictures but be aware that they will undergo close scrutiny by your recieving drill instructors. You are required to have 8 hours sleep each night unless you have a firewatch rotation, however, dont expect to always get 8 hours anyway. If you have any further questions you can email me and I will more than happy to answer them for you.

What you can take ? Sleep ? what's that.
Just kidding.
Well, when you get there, they do the paperwork, indoc, etc etc. They will eventually make it to the barber where they take your hair, and then off to get fit for uniforms and march you through outfitting where they take your side and give you the things you will need like uniforms, underwear, toiletries, etc, etc.
Actually, the giving is a misgnomer. They will backcharge your first check while in bootcamp so that you pay for all the stuff they up front "give" you to start off.
It isn't until later on in boot camp that they will allow you to purchase things on your own...which of course has to fit in your locker so don't count on anything bulky or fancy.
Boot camp is all about initial training for discipline, obedience and how well you can take orders and perform.
It isn't a luxurious life, but we all have to go through it to be in the military. Hell week is the roughest...usually.
I literally showed up with nothing but a coat, wallet, some money, comb.
they usually tell you to ditch any pocket knives with over a 2 inch blade.

A change of clothes - you'll be wearing them anyway. Underwear. Shaver, soap, pen, paper, stamps, etc. But know that you will get shoes and socks for your footlocker which must be just so. And you may have an electric razor but in the footlocker you will have to have a blade-type. Don't take a lot of money; it may disappear if others know you have it.
As far as sleep goes, you'll get what everyone else gets - typically 6 hours. But if your gear is in bad shape, expect to stay up later to polish brass, shine boots, etc. They turn the lights out and turn them on so you all get up at the same time.
Just remember that they want to break everyone down to the same level and then build you all up to a higher level.
Millions have done it; you can too.

you just take yourself, within a few hours of arriving all your cloths you arrived in and anything you brought with you are packed and sealed away.if your running shoes are up to standard they allow those otherwise you buy a new set with your issued chits (money) .sleep ran about 5-6 hrs unless you had firewatch. The training is more mental than physical, tho theres a lot of very nasty physical also, words like 'thrashed" and "bend and thrust" become permenant nightmares,LOL...best advice, study the info you get from your recruiter A LOT,learn your general orders upside down and backwards before you ship to MCRD, and never quit no matter how hard the task. Somethings may have changed but thats what i remember from 20yrs ago at San diego.

only the clothes on your back,if you are married, you can wear your ring.don't take anything else or the drill instructors will zero in on you like buzzards on a kill,in the marine contract, you are guaranteed three meals and one half hour of sleep per day,but it works out to taps at 22:00 and revalry at 06:00.don't try to think ever or the d.i. will spot you.it is their job to think for you.you will never go through anything as near this for the rest of your life and you wouldn't sell the experience for any amount of money.it is as torture as torture can be, dating back for two hundred years, as you will belong directly to the office of the president and no other branch can claim this by law.at times, you will feel that you are loosing your mind too, don't worry about it, as that is the intent of the real bootcamp,at least, you aren't in the ole' corps during the vietnam war when it was normal to recieve beatings and adapt to lots of pain
