The community college I work at held a student activities council poker tournament with cash prizes.

Isn't there something illegal about this?

Normally, I wouldn't care, but I want to bring down the dean. He's a shady character, and everyone wants the guy gone.

I work at a gas station/convienence store, and we just got this new policy today saying the employees are not allowed to buy lottery tickets when we are off the clock. It is undertandable that we are not allowed to purchase scratch tickets, lotto, and the pull tabs while we are working but now we are not even able to purchase them when we are not working. Can they tell us what to do when we are not 'on the clock'? I was just wondering.

I live in Georgia. The company I work for gave letters to approximately 20 "lead men" stating that we are required to attend a 10 hour OSHA training class. The class will be held on a Saturday. This is in addition to our 40 work week. The letter states that the meeting is "mandatory". No mention of pay was made in the letter. When someone inquired, they were told, "The class itself is $400 per employee. The company is absorbing that. The employees should be thankful that we get to attend for free." That was from the project manager. When I asked my foreman about it, he told me, "Sometimes you have to take one on the chin." I am furious at the audacity of this. Can someone who is familiar with labor law, please inform me to the legality of this? What steps (if any) can employees take to insure we are paid? What repricussions could there be if we refused to attend, or just didn't show up? Thank you.

I'm an extremely brilliant 8th grader and on my way to high school. I want to get my undergraduate's and study law at columbia university. I come from a poor family, so I need a scholarship. what should i do in high school to get it? I know it's kind of too much to hope for, but I have mostly A's in school and I think I might have a chance.

I would really appreciate any advice that anyone could offer to me; I know I am a little too young but I think it is good to get a head start on things.

I was married in June of 2006, as of Feb 20 th 07 we still have not received our wedding video. We paid up front 2k. Every time we contact him he says he is "backed up" or " a couple more weeks" He did not even respond to our last phone message. Contract does not specify date of completion, but does state we can purchase master video after 6 months. I think This would imply that video would have been done at 6 months. Are we screwed because contract does not specify date? Do i have a case to threaten him with small claims court? Even though no date is specified, would the courts hold him accountable? What is to keep him from taking 2 years!

I just moved into a place. My roommates girlfriend has a 3 year old severely mentally retarded daughter. She can't talk, walk, sit up, or make eye contact-she just lays there. Anyway, I would get up sometimes in the night (3am) and I noticed the closet light on. The child was in there, laying down. There is no heat in the closet and it is around 64 degrees in there. The child had on clothes and a very thin blanket and a pillow. (she could stretch out). The light was on. In the 3 weeks since I've lived here, I have encountered this about 5 times. The girlfriend is only over here 3-4 nights a week. What should I do and is this a form of child abuse?

Murder is just attempted murder that happened to succeed. Why not call it what it is? It's attempted murder. When you try to kill someone there's no guarantee they're actually going to die, so it's always attempted murder.

If the legal age to imbibe in California (Los Angeles County specifically) is 21, could someone please give me a logical reason why Target asks for ID for anyone "appearing" to be 40- years or older, when buying booze? Yes, it's flattering but it's also an insult. We send young men to war yet card someone who is 40 to check they are old enough to drink! That's illogical.

Minor in consumption law...what happens now?

Last week I was arrested by a police officer who believed I was drunk driving. I'm 18 years old. (side note: he never read me my rights when he arrested me). I was taken to the jail and tested to be below the legal limit for my age, and therefore not drunk driving, but was issued a minor in consumption ticket.

I was booked, but I can't remember if I was given a sheet saying I needed to go into court or not. Some people I've asked said they will just mail me a fine, but others have said that I have to go into court.

I'm in Idaho; what's the law here say about this?
