Does the requirement for police certificate apply also to minors, 1yr and 5 yr olds? In other words, is one expected to obtain separate certificates for each of kids?

MEXICO CITY (AP) — A Mexican Senate committee passed a measure Wednesday urging President Felipe Calderon to send a diplomatic note to the United States protesting the deportation of an illegal migrant who took refuge in a Chicago church for a year.

The committee also approved a scholarship to help her 8-year-old U.S.-born son, Saul, who is an American citizen and stayed in the United States.

Elvira Arellano, 32, became an activist and a national symbol for illegal immigrant parents by defying her deportation order and speaking out from her sanctuary in the Adalberto United Methodist Church. She announced last week that she was leaving to try to lobby U.S. lawmakers for immigration reform.

"We cannot remain quiet in view of this injustice and must ask for firm action from our authorities," Mexican Sen. Humberto Zazue said.

for at least four years. If they were unable to finish the four years, because they decides to quit, they would be deported. I also understand, you can't just go awal, but when you have another country to call home, I highly dought the US will go looking for them.

I for one would have no problems with this becuase if they are willing to fight for this country then, to me, they are considered American.

TAR HEEL, N.C. (AP) - Federal officials arrested 28 people suspected of identity theft during raids at a Smithfield Foods' slaughterhouse in Tar Heel and in neighborhoods in four surrounding counties.

Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency spokesman Richard Rocha says agents made the arrests in Bladen, Cumberland, Hoke and Robeson counties.

Smithfield spokesman Dennis Pittman says company officials learned about the raid not long before agents arrived at about 4 a.m. to remove some workers from the world's largest hog processing plant.

Rocha says 25 arrestees are Mexican, two Guatemalan and one Honduran. Thirteen were women and 15 were men.

Eight were arrested at the plant, while the rest were arrested at homes.http://www.wistv.com/Global/story.asp?S=6970213&nav=menu36_3

One city devises its own immigration policy

MARICELA was eight when, with her parents, she crossed the border from Mexico. Twelve years later, a high-school graduate with an American accent, she is still illegal, unable easily to rent a flat, open a bank account or get a library card. She and the 10,000-12,000 other undocumented immigrants in New Haven, Connecticut, are hoping that a new policy may make their lives better.

As the federal government has proved itself incapable of formulating an immigration policy, local governments are stepping in as they did on health care and the environment. New Haven, home to Yale University, is already considered a sanctuary for illegal immigrants. It offers help in filing federal taxes, and it has ordered its police not to inquire about immigrants' status. Last week it became the first city to issue its own ID card. All 125,000 residents may have one: legal and illegal, children as well as adults.

The card cannot be used for federal or state services, but it will allow holders to use city beaches and libraries. It can also be used as a debit card at many downtown restaurants and shops, and for parking meters. Two banks, First City and Sovereign, have agreed to accept the card, allowing users to open accounts. Until now, most of the city's undocumented immigrants were forced either to carry their cash or to hide it at home, making themselves easy targets for muggers and burglars.

These immigrants, mostly from Latin America, make up most of the block-long application queue at city hall. The card costs $10 for adults and $5 for children. The rest of the programme's costs will be funded by a $250,000 grant from First City.

In June the town's board of aldermen approved the measure by a vote of 25 to one. Less than two days later, immigration and customs enforcement agents conducted home raids on undocumented immigrants, with 32 arrests. Only five of those arrested had outstanding warrants. John DeStefano, New Haven's mayor, suspects the raids were in retaliation for the card. Michael Chertoff, the secretary of homeland security, has denied it. Further raids have been suspended.

City officials say the data collected during the application process will be kept confidential. Information will probably not be shared with the federal government unless someone is under criminal investigation. Michael Wishnie, a Yale law professor who has been retained by the city to fight any court challenges, points out the cards are no different from records already possessed by the Internal Revenue Service and by health and welfare agencies.

While cities like New York, Miami and San Francisco are considering adapting similar programmes, others are trying to tighten laws. Last year Hazelton, a small Pennsylvania town, began fining landlords who rent to illegal immigrants and penalising employers for hiring them. On July 26th a federal judge struck down the measure. The ruling has national implications, as 100 other cities have adopted something similar.

New Haven's anti-immigration groups say the cards violate federal laws against aiding illegal immigration. And they fear the city will be inundated with illegal migrants. But it is not easy to obtain a card. Residents must show valid government-issued photo identification, such as a passport, driving licence or consular document. They must also prove residency in New Haven with two utility bills, a pay stub, tax statements, or documents from health and social-service agencies. About 25-50% of applicants are turned away for not having the papers required. Maricela did not get a card; she could not prove she was a resident of New Haven.

Let's face it , I have seen the distance between the toilets and the workers and it can be as far as 1/8 of a mile away. Do you honestly think they will walk all the way to use it ALL of the time ?
Or prehaps this might be an oppourtune time to get back at WHITEY by giving him a salad dressing that he will never forget.
So think about it. -
Yea I know you wash your food. But it gives me the creeps just to think that something like this may happen. And in my opinion it probably does.

Could we have that here? With no abusive reporting of people for disagreeing?

That is a cowardly little way of dealing with someone just because they say things you don't like to read. And it poisons things for real honest discussion and debate and yes maybe even learning something.

Who else is disgusted by abusive reporters and wants this to be a free and open forum??

Honestly, people. You can't just keep blaming the immigrants for everything. People have been doing it for 200 years. We've increased restrictions on it, tightened up border control, and yet these problems have ceased to go away afterward.
Has anyone thought that maybe the two really aren't that related?
Our economy is not messed up because of immigrants. It is messed up because of generations of ridiculous laws and policies and a corrupt government.
Our crime rate is not highered by immigrants. Very light research can show that immigrants have a nearly identical crime rate to non-immigrant males.
Our nation is not endangered by immigrants. This one is too ridiculous to even argue against. There's just as much chance as an American doing the same thing.
So what I'm asking is, why do people keep blaming them? This is an honest question. I want to know why it happens.
(note: everytime I said 'immigrant' I meant illegal or no)

How do you reconcile Mexicans (and others) just wanting to "improve their lives" to American lives going down the toilet?

12-20 million illegals doing jobs that used to belong to Americans. Yes the illegals TAKE jobs, these jobs didn't just magically appear when an illegal crossed the border. Many-many jobs just started paying less..... allot less.

Americans have children to support and mortgages to pay. Illegals improving their lives are parasites on the American middle class and lower class. The sad TRUTH is that America can only take so much before we break and become just another 3rd world country.

And before you say: "you have but just havent noticed", CLEARLY that means it wasn't that big of a deal if I haven't noticed.

Moving on, I live in NYC. There are of course, illegal immigrants from every country here, but honestly, my life hasn't been affected by it. The only drug dealers I know are the people who I go to school with (who are ALL legal, white, and loaded), there are no illegal immigrants in my school, I've never had to wait at a hospital, and for the most part, all of the illegals live in one concentrated area. A lot of Spanish (and French and Hebrew especially) is spoken but I don't think anybody really minds because everything is in, if not only, English as well. Maybe its because where I live, but my life has never been affected.

READ BEFORE YOU ANSWER: THIS IS NOT TO EXCUSE ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION. I AM JUST WONDERING. PLEASE ANSWER HONESTLY AND RELATIVE TO THE QUESTION.

I for one am sick of the immigration problem. I am becoming a minority in my own country. I'm not racist at all I have LEGAL mexican friends. But something really needs to be done. Sure they spend money in our country, they have to eat, wear clothing and have a roof over their head. I would love to know the total of the millions of our dollars that is being sent to Mexico through Western Union. There are so many in California there want be any water left there in 10 years .Hell there want even be Social Security for me when I get old enough to retire. God help you if you get in a car wreck caused by an illegal, your screwed, because they don't have insurance. Why in then hell want our government do something before we are in a depression??????

Does anyone else see this like I do??
I think all these candidates are trying too hard to convince the American people that they will grab the bull by the horns and fix the immigration problem in the US.
In my opinion they will slowly but surely start to change their views as soon as they are elected. They know the economic effect will be negative if they give the boot to ALL illegals here in the US. Not only that, most of the candidates have in someway helped the illegals get more benefits in the cities they live in. Some have even hired them to keep their gardens in shape.
So does any one else agree with my prediction??

When it is a situation their own government has provoked ??? Theoretically, every Latin American person should get a part of what has been stolen from their countries throughout the years. Big American corporations along with organizations such as the CIA are responsible for draining and controlling all of Latin America's economy. So stop whining and pay your debt.
