While coming through the dial yesterday I heard a segment on the Limbaugh show that was at best a distortion of history, at worst a history revision to serve political purposes.
Limbaugh stated that JFK was a "communist fighter" and spoke about his administration fighting the communists in Vietnam.
JFK inherited Vietnam from Eisenhower. There were 2,000 "advisors" stationed in Vietnam when JFK took office. JFK's admin. sent over about 15,000 more advisors. By 1963, though,, JFK had asked McNamara to create a plan for their withdraw. JFK NEVER laid any plans for upwards of 450,000 troops being stationed in Vietnam, as later became the situation under LBJ.
JFK had mentioned more than once to his advisors that he saw little purpose for America fighting a serious war against the Viet Cong in a "jungle half a world away".\
JFK lived in an era of Soviet threat and expansion. JFK tried to use diplomacy and tough words to contain communism, and was cautious using troops.
