TAR HEEL, N.C. (AP) - Federal officials arrested 28 people suspected of identity theft during raids at a Smithfield Foods' slaughterhouse in Tar Heel and in neighborhoods in four surrounding counties.

Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency spokesman Richard Rocha says agents made the arrests in Bladen, Cumberland, Hoke and Robeson counties.

Smithfield spokesman Dennis Pittman says company officials learned about the raid not long before agents arrived at about 4 a.m. to remove some workers from the world's largest hog processing plant.

Rocha says 25 arrestees are Mexican, two Guatemalan and one Honduran. Thirteen were women and 15 were men.

Eight were arrested at the plant, while the rest were arrested at homes.http://www.wistv.com/Global/story.asp?S=6970213&nav=menu36_3

Coragryph- I hope you didn't become a top contributor with other answers as stupid as this one. ICE does not arrest citizens in these raids. The VERY FACT that these people were arrested by ICE means they were illegal immigrants who stole other people's identities for their own personal gain. Remember the I in ICE stands for IMMIGRATION.

I had someone use my Social Security to obtain WIC and Medical. It truly infuriated me to know that someone was collecting benefits with my social security number.

I have no Idea how this illegal obtained my social security number. All I know is that as an American my benefits and what I work so hard for was taken from me. I don't need to be on medicare or WIC but if I did, It probably wont be there for me because an Illegal immigrant took it.

I am all for coming to this country and doing things the right way. But if an illegal is just gonna mooch and breed and take what this great country has to offer and abuse it. That is wrong and it needs to be addressed and dealt with properly. I say deport all the people who are here illegally and committing fraud. They should also pay for all the medical bills they incurred for all the kids they had in this country. If they had to pay for their health care they probably wouldn't have so many kids.

the person who said "they commited id theft to work not to rip people off" Dont you see the flaw in your own statement?

they broke laws to get into the country, then they had to break laws to work in the country, what law will they have to break for their next need?

it just snowballs.

if the poeple they stole id's from are not dead people's SSN's do you think they will still feel the same as you when the IRS asks them why they didnt report all the extra income the illegal made on their tax return?

This almost seems too good to be true - I want to see them shipped off in person. My newspaper yesterday had the names and pictures of 5 illegals they are deporting. It made my day.

OK, so 28 people were arrested for identity theft.

What does that have to do with immigration?

Nothing in the news report says anything about the immigration status of these people. All of them could be US citizens for all we know. Or legal residents.

Using a social security number which was illegally obtained (including any number "made up", bought, "borrowed", belonging to anyone else like family member or friend, or gotten by false ID, or any false information, such as legal status), is a FELONY, for which the punishment is 25 years in federal prison and a $250,000.00 fine.
In the case of illegal aliens who commit that specific felony (a serious crime), they are deported at the end of their prison sentence.

Thanks to ICE for arresting 28 more criminals. Hopefully they are all deported as soon as possible.

Here is another one from today:

Immigration authorities arrest 60 gang members, associates during North County sweep on illegal aliens.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY ---- Federal immigration officials, with assistance from local law enforcement agencies, have arrested 60 Mexican nationals with ties to street gangs as part of an ongoing nationwide sweep, authorities said today.

The initiative by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement ---- dubbed Operation Community Shield ---- targeted gang members and associates in North County, including Vista, San Marcos, Escondido and Oceanside, agency spokeswoman Lauren Mack said. Most of the arrests made were in North County, she said.

Among those arrested were 11 people who will be criminally prosecuted, including six who will be prosecuted by the San Diego District Attorney's office on state charges including drug and weapons violations, Mack said. The other five will be prosecuted on federal charges including weapons and re-entry after deportation, she said.

"Street gangs pose a growing public threat to communities throughout this area," said Serge Duarte, deputy special agent in charge for the San Diego branch of the immigration office. "The violence, sophistication, and scope of these organizations have reached intolerable levels. This operation shows how ICE is working with its law enforcement partners to dismantle these criminal organizations and protect our communities."

In addition to those arrested who had gang ties, authorities also arrested 68 other Mexican nationals who are believed to be in the country illegally, including "many with prior criminal convictions," Mack said. Arrestees who are not facing criminal prosecution will be processed to be deported, she said.

128 illegal aliens arrested for deportation and prosecution. Way to go ICE!
Now go after the rest of the 20 million illegal alien criminals in the nation.

im not sure what you want as an answer here. what it comes down to here is they broke the law, no matter what they were going to do with someone else's identity. would you feel ok with it if it were yours they stole?

Well...

They commit identity theft to work, not to rip off credit cards or anything.
