Silly question? Maybe, but its important.

Sham marriages.

They are on the news, on current affair shows and many court cases I've witnessed revolve around them. Usually women who are from other countries marry a western man for the sake of his pension, his benefits, and of course, that ever important visa or citizenship certificate.

And these marriages end in tears or anger when the "shammer" takes the property and disappears, or when the man dies and she is in a family provision legal battle with his family (first wife and adult children).

Its happened too many times and causes social and personal problems. It also affects racial issues indirectly, as it gives the race of these shammers a bad name.

Is there any way to prevent or foresee a sham marriage? What are some practical methods or policies that individuals and governments can take to protect their citizens from sham marriages?

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A 23-year-old Mexican woman with three American-born children, including one just three weeks old, will return voluntarily to Mexico after what supporters call a harrowing experience with authorities during a traffic stop.
Miriam Aviles-Reyes, an illegal immigrant, and the human rights group Derechos Humanos say a Tucson police officer was abusive and called the Border Patrol without necessary cause.Tucson police spokesmen deny the officer did anything wrong and say the officer was following departmental policy.
Aviles-Reyes went into labor during the traffic stop, and her husband, who was also an illegal immigrant, was deported immediately - before she could deliver her son the next day.Supporters of Aviles-Reyes say she was given the option of agreeing to a voluntary departure or facing a 10-year ban from entering the country.http://kvoa.com/Global/story.asp?S=7561444&nav=menu216_3

If so, my condolences for your misplaced emotion.
Vigilante or just vigilant, Pasadena resident Joe Horn blasted himself into a world of controversy Nov. 14 when he fatally shot two men he said were breaking into the house of his next-door neighbor.
Despite repeated admonitions of a 911 dispatcher not to confront the pair, the 61-year-old computer consultant stepped onto his front porch, spotted the men in his front yard and shot them in the back. Killed in the midday incident were Hernando Riascos Torres, 38, and Diego Ortiz, 30, both black Colombian nationals later determined to have been in the United States illegally.

In a taped conversation with the dispatcher, a clearly agitated Horn expressed concern that the men would escape with a bag of stolen property.

Horn, in a written statement released through his lawyer, Tom Lambright, later lamented the shootings, conceding they would "weigh heavily on me for the rest of my life."

While Horn's actions may have been protected under law — his lawyer says he fired in self-defense — the shootings ignited a contentious debate on gun rights, racism and immigration.Still simmering among some was the memory of an August crash in which three people, one of them a 2-year-old boy, died.

Police said the driver of a second vehicle, illegal immigrant Juan Felix Salinas, was intoxicated. He had been arrested earlier in the year for "violently shaking his wife," authorities said. He avoided being detected by immigration authorities, however, by signing a "non-arrest" bond, which some victim advocates have called a loophole for illegal immigrants.

I have nothing against law abiding legal immgrants. The people I have an issue with are the illegal immigrants who are committing violent crimes against American citizens at an alarming rate. It seems like almost every week I read a story about an illegal immigrant drunk driver who hit & killed an American citizen. In almost every major urban area of the U.S. there are violent gangs formed by illegal immigrants from Mexico & Central America. In particular there's the gang MS-13 formed by illegal immigrants El Salvador. They're like a plague. They're stabbing people, they're raping, they're killing, they're intimidating. The illegal immigrant numbers in America are not sustainable. Besides the importation of crime & gangs, there’s also poverty & ruin of the neighborhoods. Clearly it is a question of quantity & critical mass. The more illegal immigrants that arrive in the U.S. at once, the slower the assimilation will be. This is a common sense concept that leftists don’t seem to have grasped. And the common sense response is to conclude that there are too many coming in at once right now.http://www.ibdeditorials.com/IBDArticles.aspx?id=281232471584382

Doing nothing to solve the Immigration problem and yet they help and promote it at the same time by giving a Tax number to illegal people so they can pay taxes like any other US citizen. But they can't claim any Tax returns (the IRS provide this number)

Groups demanding a crackdown on illegal immigrants gathered before dawn today at a north Phoenix day laborers center, and shut it down on the eve of the day Arizona's new employers sanctions law takes effect.
The center's operator, Salvadore Reza, told the few days laborers who were there to go home. That triggered a shouting match between Reza and the demonstrators, led by a group called United for a Sovereign America. ``Merry Christmas, Happy New Year," Reza yelled at the demonstrators who yelled back ``We love America, and Happy New Year to you, Buddy." Rick Galeener, with United for a Sovereign America, said the demonstrators would stay at the day labor center, near 25th Street and Bell road. ``He (Reza) wished us a Happy New Year, we wished him a Happy New Year. But, we're going to stay here to let the contractors who driev by know that they are not supposed to be picking up illegals," Galeener said.

Unlike most mexicans i have actually always been legal in the country, for the past 6 years, from one visa to another (L2, F1) but now my dad has been granted a green card trough work but im to old to qualify under his "umbrella" though everyone else in my family is eligible. i do understand once they obtain the permanent residency. they should be able to petition me to "join" them but then after that do i still have to wait another 5 years to become a US citizen?

Q: Question: how can I go to America?

Question Details: I want to learn. I have political problem like many Oromo’s in Ethiopia.

A: Deleted Answer: It would be easier to go to Canada, they have much more liberal immigration Laws. Basically they take everyone. Many illegal immigrants come to the US on student visas. These are typically children of rich parents who pay all of their bills. These types of students usually try to stay in school for as long as they can by taking the minimum required course load, switching majors or going for advanced degrees. The other way is to have a relative in the US that can sponsor you. They will need to be a citizen and will have to agree to be financially responsible for you for 10 years. Short of that some foreigners come here to start a business or as a church employee. The legal ways are all explained at http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis Asylum cases are difficult because basically the entire third world could probably claim asylu

I was doing a paper on education last week and read that the Los Angeles County Unified School District is 73.2% Hispanic. With this type of racial growth and the immigration (legal and illegal) flux from Mexico, Central and South America, won't the U.S. be considered a Latin American Nation soon?

The fanatical attacks on immigrants to the United States have risen to an irrational level. As a nation composed of immigrants, this divisive obsession on the part of some people poses an imminent threat to our national security.

By supporting measures that would reduce immigrants to animal/chattel status ("Shoot them on sight" "No, put them in work camps" etc.), the anti-immigrant fanatics are preparing the way for those who would take away the rights of ALL workers in this country.

They provide a cover for racism, use helpless people as scapegoats, and promote a culture of disdain for learning foreign languages, which destroys the ability of the U.S. to function in foreign markets. Removing the many billions of dollars that are pumped into the U.S. economy, with only a few million taken out, due to the actions of immigrants, would destroy the U.S. economy.

As people posing an imminent threat to U.S. national security, should anti-immigrant fanatics be imprisoned?

Many decent Americans are trying to come up with ways to control the immigration problem, right? Someone please tell me why the hell a newborn child is granted citizenship when both parents are illegally in the United States? This is not only the most ridiculous way around the system, but it also gives them a REASON to pump out as many kids as they can, when they already reproduce at an astounding rate. Not only this, but it now becomes pretty much impossible to deport the partents, because they now have legal kids! Anyone else infuriated by this loop hole in the system!! And believe me, they know that this works for them, they are masters of milking our system for all they can get for free. And while were on the subject of free, they have no insurance, so you and I, Mr. and Mrs. American Taxpayers, are paying for all of their hospital bills and maternity expenses, as well as sending their kids to our schools for free, since again they pay no taxes. Go ahead Liberals, attack me.

I'm an American citizen and I just graduated college so I don't have a lot of real work experience. My boyfriend is in England and even though we are serious and want to get married, we just want to be settled and have a little more security first. I don't want the need of a visa to be a factor in getting married, or something driving us to get married now. I've applied to no less than 100 job offerings online (no exaggeration) without luck. I spent 2 months there looking for a job, but it seems that I am either unqualified or there is cheaper labor avaliable for some of the unskilled positions. Anyone have any suggestions?
