I'm an American citizen and I just graduated college so I don't have a lot of real work experience. My boyfriend is in England and even though we are serious and want to get married, we just want to be settled and have a little more security first. I don't want the need of a visa to be a factor in getting married, or something driving us to get married now. I've applied to no less than 100 job offerings online (no exaggeration) without luck. I spent 2 months there looking for a job, but it seems that I am either unqualified or there is cheaper labor avaliable for some of the unskilled positions. Anyone have any suggestions?

Ok .....couple of things. (1) Talk to the local Counsulate-General for the UK in your area. They might be able to help. (2) Talk to your local British-American Relations organization. They have business connections on both sides of the 'pond' and they might be able to give you some names of people to talk to about the process and what you'll need to do.

(3) Start making the rounds of the other trade organizations that have offices near you. Specifically - is there an organization that works with businesses that do things that are related to the things you studied in college? You'll want to get a good resume together for that effort, of course, and make sure you spend a bit of time researching the companies that you'd like to apply to BEFORE your send your resume.

Lastly, and most importantly....be humble in this process. Businesses in the UK have access to a great deal of talent from all over Europe...and they have a natural bias AGAINST hiring Americans. If you're going to succeed, you have to be a great deal better than your competition in order to get even an interview. In other words- you have to be the best candidate - and the most motivated candidate - in order to get a job over there.

If you have the time and the financial flexibility, think about working for a UK or NGO non-profit. They need help and have looser criteria (somewhat) than their for-profit colleagues. That might give you the 'in' you're seeking.

One final thought: applying for positions ONLINE sucks. The only way you are going to get the attention you are seeking from employers is to send honest-to-goodness hard-copy resumes and cover letters. ONLINE applications are a dime a dozen and almost NO ONE gets hired that way (think one candidate out of a thousand).

Good luck and DON'T GIVE UP!!

Britian is moving towards a points system for non EU immigrants. With only a Batchelors degree you won't score many points. Your only hope of a job is to be better than any Britian or EU citizen and to be cheaper. You won't be able to apply for unskilled work as you won't be able to get a visa for that. Marriage may be your only quick option, otherwise you need to work in the USA to gain the job skills you need to be more marketable.
You may want to try getting a job with a US company that has offices in the UK. A transfer would get you into the country.

UK has it's own illegal immigration problems and when someone like you tries they cut you off.I think a visa is the best way until you can make things more balanced.Other wise you will be paying $$$$$$$$$ for legal work that may get you no where
