Immigration - July 2007

[Selected]: All categories Politics & Government Immigration

I believe that everything comes to an end sooner or later. There are two things that come to mind in terms of the end of America:

(1) Hillary Clinton as President (not because she is a woman but because her view of life spells TROUBLE)

(2) If America does not put a stop to illegal immigration (notice I said illegal not legal), Americans will no longer have a country of their own.

By the way, I was born in the Dominican Republic but I am also legal here. My family and I were granted LEGAL STATUS way back in April 1973. In other words, we did not cross the borders. I am one of many LEGAL hispanics TOTALLY against illegal latinos coming here in the name of cheap labor.

Your view, PLEASE?

im so tired of hearing the excuse from pro-illegals that many americans are on welfare! WTF??? most Americans are citizens who have paid taxes all their lives and they may need welfare at some point for their children....maybe some of them are lazy and dont want to work....but what difference does it make.....this is THEIR country, not the illegals country! enough of that excuse! id rather support an American citizen(even if they are lazy!) on Welfare than letting an illegal to get it...espacially for their anchor babies....they have no right to get welfare as this is not their country! what would you choose???

trust me, i know about this isssue.ive lived around predominantly illegal immigrant areas and i know many lazy illegals who have welfare and get many government benefits many americans dont get!

If they are illegal they do not deserve our constitutional rights to begin with. they deserve punishment to the extent of the law.

Which law would it be and how would you implement it?

I would change the law regarding visa over stayers.I would implement a card much like a drivers license with a photo that is tied to a National database. It would flag the visa one month before expiration so we could contact the person and verify whereabouts.

How many Americans are being killed in traffic accidents by illegal aliens? As noted by a Media Matters article interview, Boyles guest acknowledges "no one really knows how many Americans per day are being killed by illegal aliens"as it is all a guess based on bits and pieces starting with the fact that nobody knows how many illegal aliens are actually in the USA.
The estimates on the number of illegal aliens in the USA range from a generally accepted low of 10-12 million to a few estimates of 20 or more million. Census Bureau Distortions Hide Immigration Crisis Real Numbers Much Higher says that thenumbers may actually be far higher.
For the sake of argument we??™ll use 15 million. A straight proportional participation of illegal aliens in traffic accidents can now be estimated. Thus 15 million illegal aliens in a population of 300 million is a 5% participation level. However, as some data have suggested, the participation may be much greater than the representation. In any case, as far as we are aware, no one tracks accidents or crimes by resident status. As previously noted, coming up with a more accurate number is complicated by the fact that the mainstream media seem to go out of their way not to report residential status of the person involved in a crime or accident. Even in some of the references used in this report you will have to dig deep to find the resident status of the perpetrator. Regardless, the number is considerable and we need to ask ourselves if having 5% collateral damage for a ???victimless crime??? is acceptable.
In 2000, the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety released a comprehensive report Unlicensed to Kill detailing the carnage being caused by unlicensed drivers. While the report did not identify if the unlicensed drivers were illegal aliens, it did note that of the 278,078 drivers involved in fatal crashes in the US between 1993 and 1997 some 3.7% were unlicensed, 2.7% were of unknown licensed status, and another 7.4% were driving on invalid licenses. The end result is that during the period, 42,049 people were killed in crashes involving at least one driver who was unlicensed, driving on an invalid license, or with a license of unknown status. The report also notes that DUI drivers also played a significant part in the highway carnage.
As previously noted, a high percentage of illegal aliens tend to drive without licenses. While the number of illegal aliens involved in the 278,078 fatal crashes during the examined period is unknown, if just 5% of the 42,049 deaths were caused by illegal aliens, that is over 2,000 American citizens killed during the five year period which is an average of 400 citizens per year. While the absolute number of traffic deaths caused by illegal alien drivers is unknown, but most likely much higher than just a 5% participation rate, how many Americans should needlessly die to save a few cents on every head of lettuce? How many hit and run accidents are there? As reported by Deadly Roads, as of November 13, 2006, there have already been 1,346 killed and 91,562 injured in hit and run accidents in 2006. Extrapolating for the year, 2006 will end up with about 1,540 killed and 104,700 injured by hit and run drivers. If the illegal alien population was responsible for just 5% of the carnage, that would result in 77 killed and 5,235 injured by illegal aliens in just hit and run accidents in 2006. However, as previously noted, the data suggests that the proportional involvement of illegal aliens is far higher. As noted in Not all Hit and Run Accident Victims Die, often the injuries are often crippling, life long, and require many years of treatments and hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars in medical costs.
Illegal alien drivers kill and injure far more children than alar and second hand smoke. Combined. Which got all the press?
So much for a ???victimless crime.???

Mexico has urged the US to alter its plans for expanded fences along their shared border, saying they would damage the environment and harm wildlife.

The fences threaten unique ecosystems, Mexican environment officials warned.

Mexico was ready to file a complaint with the International Court of Justice over the matter if the US did not respond, the environment minister said.

The planned barriers aim to curb illegal immigration, a highly divisive and controversial issue in the US.

The fences, planned along a possible 700 miles (1,125km) of the border, are to be equipped with hi-tech surveillance equipment, including sensors and strong lights.

"The eventual construction of this barrier would place at risk the various ecosystems that we share," Mexico's Environment Minister Juan Rafael Elvira told a news conference.

Those areas include Baja California, Sonora and Arizona, home to one of the world's most important desert ecosystems - the Sonora Desert.

Cactus fences

Officials said Mexico was prepared to file a complaint with the International Court of Justice but wanted to explore alternatives first.

US Army personnel install sections of the US-Mexico border fence July 2007 near Puerto Palomas Mexico. Most of the illegal immigrants enter the US via the Mexico border

A report prepared for the Mexican government by experts and environmental activists from Mexico and the US said the barriers could isolate border animals into smaller groups, affecting their genetic diversity.

These include jaguars, Mexican black bears and the endangered antelope-like Sonora Pronghorn.

The use of intense lights and radar could also affect nocturnal species, they said.

The report suggested ways of minimising environmental damage, including "green corridors" of wilderness without roads.

These would allow wildlife to remain connected but not provide an easy route for people trying to cross.

Another proposal was "live" fences of cactuses, or permeable barriers to allow water, insects and pollen to cross the border.

The US Homeland Security Secretary, Michael Chertoff, has said that the fencing is needed. He has rejected arguments that the Rio Grande provides an adequate barrier as water levels in the river often drop, allowing people to wade across.

An estimated 12 million illegal immigrants are in the US, where attempts at a comprehensive overhaul of immigration law have repeatedly stalled in Congress.http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/6924475.stm

I’m sure the animals will adjust. The birds can fly over, the rodents and lizards can burrow under, and the rest of them will just have to make do with whatever piece of that desert they find themselves in after the fence is finished. They make it sound as if the poor things will need conjugal visits.
The fences threaten unique ecosystems,

Right. The mexican raw sewage deoes not “threaten unique ecosystems”

The hundreds of mexican trash piles in national forests located on the mexican border does not threaten unique ecosystems.

The foot trails that go through restricted wildlife areas do not threaten unique ecosystems

The border industries that have little to no pollution control do not threaten unique ecosystems.

I bet our fellow Americans can post photos of various Mexican items not threatening unique ecosystems.

But, of course, a stainless steel/galvanized steel professionally installed fencing system will cause immediate, extensive, catastrophic, irreversible harm to those very same unique ecosystems
It couldn’t be as harmful as hundreds of thousands of people throwing trash everywhere and stomping down fragile vegetation.

I'd like to know, as an American, how people in the UK feel about large numbers of north africans and arabs immigrating to the UK. A while back, I read in article in "Der Spiegel" regarding the tensions in the UK after the London bombings. Afterwards, there were idiots holding signs saying "Islam will dominate, etc". Why is this tolerated? At least some of the things people say have got to be illegal. Some of the other things they have said in other cases are "take the Danish women as booty". We're talking about them advocating rape. Second, question why do individuals stand by idle and allow it? I know that in the US, if someone said such things after 9/11, the reaction would be hazardous to that persons health. Thirdly, why are they so disrespectful? Your society is very generous indeed with the social benefits. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you.

Is the north american government being fair with its immigration policies? Is the north american people being fair with the south american whose fathers were legitimate owners of these lands before the massacres?

One of my good friends is an illegal immigrant (not from Mexico), who is the hardest working man I've met! He has never taken advantage of services like welfare & what not, he paid out of his pocket for the birth of his first child! He pays taxes! He knows english! Never asked for food stamps, wic, or any of that! Never been arrested, never got a ticket, the only thing he's ever done is stay on an expired visa! I think y'all have a bad image of illegal immigrants, they (most, not all), come here to work not to freeload! Sure there are some bad people that should be deported but not all are like that! I feel that if ur contributing to this country and living a descent life then they should be allowed to stay here if not get the hell out of here!!

My son was born in US early this year. My husband is a Canadian, he wants to apply a passport for our son in Canada instead of applying from US. My nationality is a third country, neither American nor Canadian. My question is: If my child obtains a passport from Canada, does it mean that he becomes a Canadian citizen? And, will he lose his US citizenship afterwards?

I've always dreamed of moving to Canada (currently in the US as a permanent resident). I would really like to take up a full-time job in Canada, in the field of Software. But I talked to a few friends who have worked in Canada (under non-immigrant visa) & they tell me that the salary is not as good as what one could make in the US (which I can understand), but also they say that the actual salary earned is only 30% of what the company pays at best, and the remaining 70% goes off as taxes! Which is worse than that in the US.

Is that true? Do you really earn very little and pay lot of taxes, if you work in Canada as a non-immigrant?

I am a United States Citizen and have Been in the UK for 7 months on a 6 month visitor visa waiver, not allowed to work or receive benefits. (overstayed 1 month)

I had my passport stolen last week in a home burglary, I have an appointment to go to the US London Embassy for a replacement passport, will they issue a new visa too for 6 months or will they know that I overstayed and send me back to USA? If so how soon can I come back? do thet ask any awkward questions?

I noticed that they do not check the passports electronically like they do in the US so there is only the stamp in the stolen passport that says when I arrived here.and there is no card to fill in for the visa waiver either so how will anyone know that I overstayed without checking airline tickets etc.

Any tips, help or advice will be greatly appreciated.

To the list of political elites who don't want immigration laws enforced, add the name of Portland's mayor. After officers of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency arrested 165 people at three different offices of the American Staffing Resources company, Mayor Tom Potter denounced the raid. Besides catching illegal aliens, ICE apprehended three of the staffing company's managers, charging them with knowingly hiring illegals and supplying them with false documentation. ASR supplies workers to the Fresh Del Monte fruit and vegetable company. ICE said up to as many as 90 of those arrested had fake or forged Social Security cards. Instead of expressing sympathy with those whose Social Security numbers had been stolen, Mayor Potter issued a statement displaying his anger at law enforcement. "I am angered by this morning's arrest by federal officers of approximately 150 Portland residents who were working at a local produce company... [T]o go after local workers who are here to support their families...is bad policy," he said.

Andres Chao, the Mexican consul in Little Rock spoke at a rally for illegal aliens in Tennessee and told listeners that while he could not officially endorse or oppose laws in the U.S., he did hope that local enforcement of immigration law was found unconstitutional. "In response to a question about new laws in Tennessee and other states meant to crack down on illegal immigration, Chao said he can only go so far in his advocacy. 'As a diplomat, I have a limit,' he said. But he said the civil leaders gathered in the room could do more and expressed hope that many such laws would be found unconstitutional," the Commercial Appeal writes.

"Recall that in 2003, Arkansas governor Mick Huckabee asked Vicente Fox to build their new consulate in Little Rock. He even temporarily housed them in a state agency office at a rental rate of $1 per year".
