My son was born in US early this year. My husband is a Canadian, he wants to apply a passport for our son in Canada instead of applying from US. My nationality is a third country, neither American nor Canadian. My question is: If my child obtains a passport from Canada, does it mean that he becomes a Canadian citizen? And, will he lose his US citizenship afterwards?

Your son is a Dual Citizen (Actually US & 2 second nationalities)

US citizen by right of birth
Canadian citizen by descent
Citizen of your nationality by descent

Contact your Embassy to find where you will file a Consular Report of Birth Abroad to register your son as a citizen by descent of your home country. It is possible that your son is a citizen even without the registration, but you will need to contact your consulate to be certain. Canada does not require registration, US does for US citizens born outside the US.

If your husband was born in Canada, then your son is a Canadian citizen and will not lose that citizenship
If your husband was NOT born in Canada then your son will be a Canadian citizen until his 28th birthday unless he applies to Retain Canadian Citizenship. Your son's children will need to do this unless their mother is born in Canada.

My son was born in Germany on American soil there while I was in the army, and came home as a baby on an American passport but because he was born there can claim citizenship. Do not think the laws are different and do not think that he will lose his right to citizenship here in the US. You are not denouncing his US citizenship just claiming dual.

Unless the law is RADICALLY different there and he hasn't renounced his Canadian citizenship your son is ALREADY a Canadian citizen and can certainly get his passport from there.

Your minor child is a US citizen because he was born here. You as his parents would either have to formally renounce on his behalf or he would once he was 18.

Yes, if he gets a Canadian passport, he will be a Canadian citizen. No, he will not lose his US citizenship.

You have to renounce your US citizenship to lose it. Canada doesn't make you renounce it (Germany does, once the child is of age.)
