One of my good friends is an illegal immigrant (not from Mexico), who is the hardest working man I've met! He has never taken advantage of services like welfare & what not, he paid out of his pocket for the birth of his first child! He pays taxes! He knows english! Never asked for food stamps, wic, or any of that! Never been arrested, never got a ticket, the only thing he's ever done is stay on an expired visa! I think y'all have a bad image of illegal immigrants, they (most, not all), come here to work not to freeload! Sure there are some bad people that should be deported but not all are like that! I feel that if ur contributing to this country and living a descent life then they should be allowed to stay here if not get the hell out of here!!

I think youre right. These people dont have a SSN so they cannot abuse the american system. South americans are all catholic, not muslims or from any other extremist religion that could represent danger for north America.
We need these people because most of us are not willing to clean toilets, cultivate or even work at mc donalds.
These are peoplee who had to flee their land for political and economical issues. What would do many north americans if a long term economical crises like that hit our country? Answer: immigrate.
Arent north americans illegal immigrants who came from an island called England and killed massively all of the actual NATIVES? At least south americans are not killing anyone.

You know the worst thing about dealing with a drug dealer? You don't know HOW illegal the person is - you already know the person has no problem breaking the law, but what if the dealer is stretching his product by spiking his cocaine with strychnine? Same thing with anyone who breaks the law - you don't know HOW criminal they are. Besdies, the impetus for the crackdown originally wasn't our neighbors from the south who are looking for a better life, it was the people illegally in this country that took over the airplanes on 9/11 - granted it is having a "trickle-down affect, which is now being exacerbated by the protests by these illegal immigrants - nobody likes someone who walks into your house uninvited, and criticizes your housecleaning and manners, you know? Another byproduct is the slowing down of drug smuggling - I hope you don't object to that? As is usual in human life, some bad eggs are spoiling the meal for everyone, but they're just going to have to deal with it, since they ARE breaking the law. I'm not going to offer any opinion on whether the law is good, but will note that continuous improvement is built right into the Constitution by the people who wrote it over 200 years ago - and it has been improving ever since! Immediate change is always destructive, so how about working to change the law, slowly, carefully, and without violence. There will still be people spitting on the flag and other symbols of the USA, but maybe less.

If what you say is true, your friend should be able to gain legal status - except that by breaking the law by staying on an expired visa, he will have a red flag. Why not go through the proper channels the first time? I know that the process is a pain in the butt, but its the same for everyone.

I agree with what you say that the problem ones should be punished but that many are contributors - but the process is in place for that very reason - to allow in the ones that are going to be contributors and block the ones that are going to be a problem. No one can monitor every single immigrant so they are often forced to make assumptions that those that are here illegally have something to hide or are unable to gain legal status, therefore they are denied privileges.

My advice to your friend and anyone else in a similar situation is to go through the proper channels and gain legal status.

I don't really have a definite stand on illegal immigration cause I don't know enough but I'll say this..
As a Mexican-American I know/have been acquainted with many illegals. As you said, many come here, work hard, and make a life for themselves.
However, many people DO abuse the system. You can ask my immigrant mother who works as a registered nurse at a hospital that caters to many without insurance and a large minority population. Or you can ask my immigrant father who has done work (fixed air conditioners & such) for people such as these.
There are people who come to this country solely to leach off the opportunities such as welfare they can get here. For example, my father met a carpenter who made $40 an hour (a pretty good amount) and whose family still lived off the government's money claiming poverty.
These people make me sad, and hurt my people's image and reputation as a whole. But they do exist, and I think they're the problem most non-racism motivated anti-immigration advocates are fighting against.
However, I do believe that they need to find a way for people to come to this country if they're willing to work. But like I said, I don't know enough to suggest something or make a definite statement.

sorry this is so long. :]

edit: I also know a lot of illegals who have eventually become good, law-following citizens so all these people saying that "the law will eventually catch up with them" is b.s. if the person's doing nothing wrong.

Regardless of your position on this issue, an illegal immigrant is a criminal.

The points you raise are the ones that closed minded people who have too much time in their hands and actually no life, can't, don't or won't see. (or tell me if being a racist is better than doing community service lets say at the Boys & Girls club?)

Unfortunately, most/many of the illegal (and also legal) immigrants are poor with little education if any. Obviously you don't get the well-prepared ones (although with the teacher shortage in Texas, they try to hire Mexican teachers) unless they are offered jobs, which obviously, weren't filled by 'Americans'. Or is your congressman an illegal immigrant?

And we can go on, and on, and on...

I always had the idea that 'Americans' were open minded, but it's a lie, they don't listen, they don't use something called 'common sense', no, most of you don't so don't whine.

Your initial statement has the answer in it. Your friend is in US in violation of the laws.

Violating the law is the very definition of a criminal action.

You may have read in the news about the clergy sexual abuse scandal. They really should be forgiven and allowed to continue in their vocation due to the fine work they have done aside from their criminal actions. The ones in the Catholic Church have even risen to the rank of Cardinal and are eligible for election to the Papacy.

No matter how fine and upstanding he may be in private and civic life, your friend is in violation of the laws of the United States and legally is a criminal subject to deportation if the US Government should choose to do so. The point in his favor is that he is a visa overstay. Of course the question you should be asking is why he chose to risk deportation and ban on re-entry over renewing his visa.

The only thing protecting him at the moment is that the Domestic Enforcement arm of USCIS is being deprived of funds so that the border can be better protected. If the emphasis shifts from Border Security to Immigration Enforcement, then your friend will be in trouble. You are doing him no favors by announcing on a World forum that he is illegal and living near you.

To Qwid_pro_quo
Illegal Aliens are required by law to pay all the taxes levied on legal residents & citizens. Under some circumstances they may claim Social Security Benefits that they earn through employment (More often though, their illegal status renders them not eligible for the SS benefits they paid for) They are entitled to receive refund of income tax overpayment (Income Tax Refund check)

If they fail to pay the local, state or federal taxes they owe, then that is exactly the same crime as it would be if a legal alien or citizen failed to pay the taxes.

IRS has a procedure in place for illegal aliens either illegal entrants or legal entrants ineligible for a social security number to obtain a Taxpayer Identification Number.

Did he follow the law in coming to this country? No he did not, therefore he is a criminal.
Anyone with any level of common sense can understand the difference between a legal act and an illegal act.
I don't care where you came from, if you don't follow the law then you should be deported. I don't care how hard you work, if you violate the law you are a criminal if you don't follow the law.

I know most or almost all illegal immigrants are good people and most are not criminals because they have not committed a crime here in the US such as under aged-drinking, murder, etc.
They are allowed to stay because 12 million illegals won't be deported> And we'll have a President who will want reform and illegals (the good ones) will be legalized.

Your friend sounds like a good guy, and I'm sure all immigrants want to be seen as hard-working, principled people who want to better their lives. However, your friend has demonstrated a lack of respect for our laws, a Federal law which happens to be a felony offense, I might add.

People who are critical of illegal immigration are also impacted by lots of things that your individual friend may not be responsible for, but are still legitimate concerns: keeping wages down, forcing contractors to use illegal immigrants in order to compete, a slave-wage economy, gangs, drug culture, an alien language, a sense of self-entitlement. Don't we Americans have a right to complain about such things?

Also consider the pressure. All of those marches last Spring where illegals were waving the flags of a foreign country and chanting that they're going to "take over the Southwest (reconquista)". How about the legal organizations like MALDEF and social organizations like MeCHA that preach hatred toward white people? What about political organizations like La Raza (the Race) that is funding politicians so that La Raza can have power. As an American, don't I have the right to be concerned?

This goes beyond your friend, and I wish him well, but the 20+ million people need to return to their native countries and make those countries better places before they come here and criticize us.

Your friend sounds wonderful and he is the type of person we would like to keep here. But he is illegal, so maybe he should find a way to apply to stay legally. Or go back and start over. Is that wrong that he should be legal?
