for at least four years. If they were unable to finish the four years, because they decides to quit, they would be deported. I also understand, you can't just go awal, but when you have another country to call home, I highly dought the US will go looking for them.

I for one would have no problems with this becuase if they are willing to fight for this country then, to me, they are considered American.

I understand illegals are "criminals", but like it or not they are here to stay.....at least we (the tax payer) will get a service for all the money we are shelling out now.

This will also allow them to prove their worth.

Sherilynne B...I am against Illegals, but I am trying new avenue to see what people think.

Plus if they do serve and become citizens, then we can hold them responsible for their actions here in the US.

Don't get me wrong..I want them ALL deported, but being a realist, I don't think that will happen.

I don't like the idea of someone whose first act upon entering the country is committing a crime being in the military. That is my objection to illegal aliens in the first place. The have no regard for U.S. laws and sovereignty.

I think this is a great idea. Illegal immigration is a huge problem in this country but all of you people calling individuals whose only crime is crossing the border criminals and speaking of gangsters and thugs as if they should be shot on sight are full of it. We've all broken the law (whether it's speeding, running a stop sign, cheating on your taxes, drinking underage or whatever) and are, therefore, technically criminals. Everyone deserves a second chance and if you take that away, what motivation do people have to improve their behavior? What motivation do other would-be illegals have to work within the confines of the system if they know that the system won't work with them and is easily manipulated to their benefit? It's not an easy problem to solve and blanket amnesty is a horrible idea but we have to do something and committing random acts of violence isn't an option.

Yes I do. I look at it this way and it is a long one but here it is....
After the Amensty in 1987, we had an influx of many illegal immigrants racing to be here in time and many did not get picked. Since, they were still coming after the fact the Federal Govt released the application form called a W-7/ITIN or Individual Tax Identification Number form to apply for a valid number when filing taxes. They govt new back then they could not afford a huge search and round up, especially after Desert Storm, so if you can't beat them, TAX them.
Thousands were filed and approved over the next 4 yrs and more were applying daily. After 1997- 10 yrs later - there had been over 4 million applications filed with over 3 million approved. Yet many of those in certain states still filed taxes which we have been benefiting from (which I don't understand how Social Security is loosing funds when over a billion dollars just from illegals paying into something they will not be able to draw from) that they will not be able to draw from themselves. Go figure
Anyway, as more came, more filed for the ITIN, and were approved. Yet those that have paid taxes and have applied for VISAS and Greencards and even Citizenship more than once I might add, have been denied. Yes, I think you would have a way to find them a little easier if you made the stipulation requirement of military service for Greencard or Citizenship and proof of taxes paid. There would be an age limit and stuff - but there would be a way to work it out.
This way, all the money that our federal govt has collected by the illegals would go to that purpose instead of lining their pockets and a portion of their pay would go to education or the community in the state they were previously living or residing when they signed up. Good IDEA! I applaud you for being a realist and not a media sniffer. Good job.

.No, no way, no how, should we allow those who broke our laws no matter how well meaning should we let illegals fight our battles for us. Do we want to a country that depends on foreigners to fight our wars for us, what does it say about us that we not only look the other way when we let illegals do our dirty work but die for us to, I think we had that back in the beginning of our country, it was called indentured servants. Then there is the problem of what to do with those that come forwarded but are unable to serve, for a variety of reasons, do we then deport them, how fair would that be, so many would enlist knowing that it was the ticket to get amnesty. This would also send a message for more to come, or those here, to think that their amnesty is just one category away

I'm all for it. I say make EVERY immigrant serve for four years in some capacity. Maybe not the military, but there are plenty of other public works that need doing, like building roads and bridges, maintaining the parks, and all that stuff. Plus, if we were to mobilize all these people to do public works, you'd need support staff like cooks, babysitters and the like. Basically, how we built the Hoover Dam and other major projects like that -- it wasn't a 9-to-5 day job, they were building communities for the workers on the spot. It also has the added benefit of direct supervision to ensure assimilation into our culture. Fail assimilation, get deported just like if you fail to do the rest of your job.

Ideal situation: Jose and Maria decide to immigrate with their kids. Jose goes to work on a road crew, while Maria becomes a cook for the same crew or one nearby. Their kids are taken care of during the day by a couple of other immigrants who serve by providing child care. After they put in their time, they're legal citizens and they can find someone else to work for.

First of all they are not criminals. Second of all they do not take you tax money.by the way you should thank them because by the time you retire the only reason there is gonna be money in SS is because of all the money that this people didn't claim at the end of the year . Sure send them to Iraq so they can get killed like all the other young people. If you are gonna talk about politics get a little more educated in it!!

Absolutely not. In fact, I'd be afraid to turn my back or go to sleep. Look at the number of U.S. soldiers who have been killed by friendly fire. Would you give the enemy a loaded gun? Would you give a criminal a loaded gun? When people come to the country illegally, they have demonstrated nothing but pure contempt for our laws and they have been willing to sacrifice the lives of their children and their families to continue breaking our laws. How could anyone trust people who would steal identities, who would cross the border illegally and then would do all manner of law-breaking to continue to live in this country? No, I wouldn't want them serving with me or my children. Furthermore, I don't want my children going to school with or associating with children of illegal immigrants because just as Saul Arellano has proven, children learn what they live and he has learned lawbreaking and protesting and doing things improperly instead of learning to be a good citizen. I don't want to work with them and I don't want them handling my food because reports on the news shows they don't even care about good hygiene. They ejaculate in food, spit in it and don't even wash their hands. And before you get all up in arms--Yes we have criminals who are U.S. Citizens, too, but we have the authority to punish these people when they're caught. The illegal immigrants get away with deportation and they are free to continue their illegal acts or even turn right around and come back to "kill" or commit more crimes. No, I don't trust them to be in our armed forces. We'd never know which ones are fighting with us and which ones are shooting our soldiers or relaying our positions to the enemy.

NO - When our border patrol sees someone sneaking across the border, they should shoot first and ask questions later. Farmers shouldn't have to protect their own fields and animals against people sneaking into this country illegally. Farm workers that want to work here should GET A GREEN CARD!!!

you are wrong!the usa will bring the legal documents to them( i have relatives and friends waiting for),let me tell you that one of the biggest mistake that people like you have is to write without knowledge or research about it, i will help you, check the actual economic statistics, check what is going on in the latino countries with the free trade agreements,go to tico times.com a newspaper from costa rica(only one country) and read the true about the usa politic outside specially in america, money run this nation, and right now the countries of the most of the illegals are acting about that,do you know that iran is operating in nicaragua and the leftists plus the guerrilla are closing the market of the usa in the area, all those topics are important for your politicians and the usa,the politicians know that they ought to make a smart movement otherwise in a few years, they will have your enemies operating in all the countries of american continent, this nation like all the nations do not survive by itself.i agreed about homeland security but not about racism and abuse, outside the people are looking the usa authorities like bullies, abusing on the humble people instead of to catch the real terrorists, the image close doors, that is happening now.this is not protetionism, it is panic in masses like you are acting.

No, I am against any for of amnesty.
The thought of having all those illegals in the armed forced concerns me.
Can you imagine a huge number of illegals that would be trained AND armed? I do believe that would make things WORSE.

You cannot correct a bad act with another bad act. What you are suggesting is beyond their right of choice.

It would make the US no different from those who hire illegals for low payment. To use and be used.
