After reading these Q & A's I went and got some test strips for my tank. Now, I know some of you don't like the strips but that's all wal mart had and I'm sick so I don't feel like going anywhere else. It's close to home. Here's the results... Ammonia 3.0, nitrate 20, nitrite .5, hardness 300 (very hard), alkalinity between 120-180, and pH is about 7.8. What does all this mean? i know I sound stupid but I tested the water and don't know what the results mean. I bought some Bio-spira today and added it to the tank cause the water is really cloudy and fish don't look so good. I also bought some Easy Balance made by tetra but haven't added it. Don't know if I can w/ the bio-spira. Do I need to add it? Also, one last question. What is the difference btween aquarium salt and table salt?

I had 2 Betas and 2 Sharks (not like great whites, tigers, ect.) and some others. No the others did not eat them they are not that kind of fish. The Betas and the Sharks vinished without a trace (I'm not kidding) and their is this clearish stuff in though out the whole tank. Now it was in my old small tank but it didn't do a thing and my beta lived longer than in the other one.Can anyone tell what did or might have happened or what they clearish stuff is?

I got them a week ago and noticed gravid spots a day later. I didn't look to see if the spots were there when I got them, but they've been getting bigger and bigger. I plan to use the greenery method for protecting the babies rather than a livebearer trap because I just don't know.

I have two goldfish who have been alive for 3 years at least and just keep growing. They were originally bought as feeder goldfish for some larger fish, but they turned on the other fish and are the only ones left.

I love them, and have named them and have seperated them to a new tank, but I never really liked gold fish and woudl like to know how long they will live.

I am currently cycling my 1 and a half gallon aquarium. When I buy two african dwarf frogs and put them in the tank, instead of going out and buying a possibly expensive gravel vaccum, can I just use a turkey baster and suck out all the junk on the gravel?

She has been with us 6 months and we have her in a 2.5 gallon glass tank with a matching one that we switch her out in when we need to clean the other. She has a nice filter and very small heater. 2 fizzy stones 2 plastic plants and sleeps at night on a leaf like a bed.. Last night she was sleeping in the corner with her head near the surface gasping. I tried to get her attention and she didn't respond. Today she is sick, she is acting like she is blind or just concentrating on the pain so much she can't see. Her actual gills are dark red and she seems bloated. Her scales are sticking out somewhat, not like the really bad dropsy pics. She looks bad though, too young to be dying. So I went out and got salt, Melafix, Maracyn 2 powder. I treated water for ammonia and well.... I just want to know what else I can do. She is not dying on my watch, not this young in a clean tank. Is it possible I fed her too much? Or she is injured? Tank is too clean for her to die. We are upset andconfused

I was cleaning out my filter and I guess a few very tiny slivers of the carbon media got through the tube and embedded themselves down into my gravel that I cannot get out. They are very tiny and hard to catch without tearing apart the aquarium and decorations. Is this harmful to the fish?

For bettas, do they have to have a specific sort of water treatment? I used "Splended Betta" brand for a while, but I'm running low on that now and was wondering if I can use any brand of water conditioner for them. I mean, all brands just dechlorinate the water, right?

We have about a 1000 gallon pond with a huge bubble under the liner and we figure we need to get all of the water out, so we need to know what is a safe amount of time to have the fish in the container. I don't want to fix the pond and then have all of my fish dead. Any help on how to get the air bubbles out is also appreciated. Thanks.

I've been reading on these light systems on the net, I was wondering if you guys have any pointers for me to consider if I overlooked.
I have a 125Gal Bow front Tank, it's about 2ft deep, and 4 ft wide. I am building a hood for it, and I want to use a 250 or a 400 watt 20,000K Bulb.
How far should I mount it from the water surface?
Also, any warning you can give me would be greatly appreciated...........

The tank is 35 gallons, and the occupants include:

2 guppies (male and female)

Two loaches (squirmy, eelish bottom feeders)

One two-inch long Indian Algae Eater

...It's heated and has a filter, but isn't there some kind of happy medium so that my fish could co-exist?

My goldfish is pretty young and small. Got him from a carnival three months ago and didn't expect him to survive the week, but he's doing great. Unfortunately, our cat has attempted murder four times. The most recent attack, I found the fish (called Tafbr; it's an acronym) lying still on the ground. After reviving him in the bathroom sink, I'm looking for a safer habitat.
