I have two goldfish who have been alive for 3 years at least and just keep growing. They were originally bought as feeder goldfish for some larger fish, but they turned on the other fish and are the only ones left.

I love them, and have named them and have seperated them to a new tank, but I never really liked gold fish and woudl like to know how long they will live.

Hi Misti-well done! your lucky fish are already exceeding the average many times over as most die very young due to poor or indifferent care. It's amazing how often this happens that a poor feeder survives & turns into a nice looking big fish that wins people over. This is a sign of their determination & hardiness & as Sunday P says, they have the potential to live for very many years & 20+ is easily achieved with proper care & maintenance.

Yes, they do keep growing-to well over a foot in length so it's good to hear you have got them their own tank to play in, being Commons or Comets I would suggest they will need a 40 gallon long as a bare minimum to grow to their full potential.

I'll give you some additional since you love them so much. Common goldfish can withstand fluctuations in water quality and temperature. They are also easy to breed. If well cared for, common goldfish can live up to 10 years or more in captivity. It is a common practice to keep common goldfish in a small bowl but this allows waste in the water to build-up to toxic levels and does not provide enough oxygen. They should be kept in an aquarium of at least 10 gallons with a good filter. Actual recommendations range from this up to 100 gallons, but it is possible to enjoy goldfish even in smaller tanks. They will not notice the difference if you keep the water clean enough. If you are concerned about the fish not getting enough oxygen, you may get an air pump with an air stone or bubble strip. When adding goldfish to a new tank it is important to place no more than two at a time. This allows helpful bacteria (which turns ammonia to nitrite and finally to nitrate) to grow. If introduced in too great a number before these bacteria grow, the goldfish will die from breathing in too much of their own untreated excrement.

They can live for 20 years, but 10 years is more realistic. If you keep 2 Common Goldfish in a 40 gallon tank, I am not sure they would ever die. ; ) Goldfish often die after a couple weeks because people keep them in small bowls, but you can't put a foot long fish in a bowl 6 inches across. Good luck!

They can live into their 40's believe it or not. Most do not. 15-20 years as long as the tank is maintained properly. Average of all goldfish would be about a month, because many people don't know how to care for them properly.

A goldfish can live for a wide range of time. They can die shortly after getting them, or I have heard of one living up to 14 years. There is really no distinct age that they live until.
