Check the mouth formation is about the only differentiation I can think of between a Mollie and Plattie. Plus the males of Mollies tend to have much bigger tails in general from the ones I've seen. Look at the mouth. The mouth on a mollie will be very wide, and appear to be squarish. The Platties will be more rounded and smaller.

With guppies, there's almost very little you have to do, though you can help prompt it. But putting a male and female togeather pretty much is about all you need. Don't expect many fry to live though if you don't sperate, isolate, or give them hiding spots. Even more so if you have mollies and platties in there with them.

If it is 4-5'' it must be a sailfin molly, and if it hasn't got a really big dorsal fin (top fin) It is a female. Breeding guppies is to easy. I used to have 3 and now there are... well about 100 and all you need to start breeding is 2 females (so 1 doesn't get too stressed) 1 male and plant cover, as said before. I recommend Java moss as this is really easy to keep and excellent cover for babies, but plastic plants will do, as long as the are a couple of bunches of them. Good luck.

At 4-5 inches, it's too big for a platy, and large even for a standard molly. It sounds almost like some of the gold sailfin mollies I've seen on the market for about 6 months: http://www.goliadfarms.com/images/fish/livebear/mollies/gold_sailfin_male.jpg , http://www.pearcespetplace.com/red%20sunset%20sailfin%20l_t%20molly.jpg If you got one of these at a platy price (~$1.50) you got a nice bargain! They usually go for around $5 each.

I'll include some links to breeding guppies below:

With crossbreeding so rampant mollies and platies are practically the same fish, I wouldn't worry too much about any differences. If you put a male and female guppy together in any kind of good, warm water they will breed like rabbits. Get some plants (fake or real) with lots of area for the "fry" to hide in. Even still most of the babies will get eaten.

Hope this helps

its too big for a platy as you say it does sound much like a molly.when breeding guppies you need at least four males to each female the males are hardy and can exhast the female to the point of death.ready for the births you need plenty of foliage for the fry to hide in even plasic netted pan scrubbers untied make a good nest to hide in.I tended to feed all my fish well in the first few weeks to ensure no scavenging on the fry and also this gives them the chance of food before the adults have taken it all xx

Mollies and platys do look vry similar in body type....and as you mentioned, mollies get a lot bigger than platys do. It could have been mis-marketed.

Maybe it's just a rare type of platy.
