I am currently cycling my 1 and a half gallon aquarium. When I buy two african dwarf frogs and put them in the tank, instead of going out and buying a possibly expensive gravel vaccum, can I just use a turkey baster and suck out all the junk on the gravel?

Yes you can use a turkey baster for cleaning the gravel for your frogs. Most people who have bowls use them to clean the bottoms. Works just as good as a vac. Just remember to be sure it is clean and doesn't have any residues on it prior to using.

With that small of a tank I would just dump some of the water in a bowel or something, move the frogs there then pick the tank up and run it under a facet til it over flows for a while.

yes, you could do that, but it'll take a while since the nossle opening is kinda small. you can go to wal-mart and buy a small gravel siphon for like 4 or 5 bucks, or get a bigger one for 7.

I never thought of that, but, yes. That would work fine. Just make sure you wash the baster before putting it in your tank. (I don't know what the fish will think of the flavor...)

It'll work, I've often used that method when cleaning out a tank full of fry, it takes time but if you do it regularly its not that much of a chore.

If you do it often enough, you might be able to make it work, but its going to take a lot of work. It would be much quicker and easier to just buy a small siphon.
