The small glass bowls that you see in cartoons with a goldfish in don't work - they will quite quickly kill the fish or go green or generally just not work very well. I have a Biorb which looks like a goldfish bowl but has filters and all the necessary kit to keep the fish healthy. They do a small one which might suit your needs...

How many gallons is your tank? Looking after goldfish is not as easy as you would think, but once you get the hang of it and the tank is all set up, its easy. you should be able to get a small filter for cheap, a bubbler is a good thing because it makes oxygen in the tank for them to breathe, you'll need a small air pump, some tubing and the bubbler. Also, it's a good idea to cycle the tank before you put fish in it. Since you put in old gravel, thats good, it puts some bacteria in there. You can try fake plants, and some ornaments so they can hide in. Goldfish can go into shock very easily so if you put them in a plastic bag and float them in the new tank for about 20-30 minutes they won't go into shock when you pour them in. Hope this helps Good luck :D

For starters, you can't keep Goldfish in little glass bowls. Goldfish get very big, the Fancy Goldfish get 8 inches, and the Common/Comet Goldfish get 12 inches long. If you want a fish bowl, get a Betta. Even a Betta will not be happy, but it will live. Just thought I would add this, do you really want to teach your child that it is okay to be cruel and put a fish in a tiny bowl? That kills the fish and says "Life is disposable". Get a little tank with a heater (2.5 gallons minimum) and get a Betta. They are much more colorful, smaller, cleaner, and fun than Goldfish are. (Just don't keep more than one male Betta in the same container, they will fight each other and eventually, one will die.) Good luck! Email me at nosoop4u@cox.net if you have any questions.

For 1 goldfish I'd recommend at least 2 foot long tank and a bowl is completely not suitible. Try a local fish shop, or biorb tanks are designed for goldfish so try that (If you want a smaller tank, do not get a non-fancy goldfish).

Goldfish shouldn't be kept alone either. For a small group (3) of fancy goldfish, you need a tank at least 3ft long. For a small group of common goldfish, double that. You wouldn't keep a kitten in a birdcage all it's life, so don't submit other equally important animals to unnessecary cruelty just to keep a child occupied for five minutes.

You can get a glass tank at ANY fish shop, or most garden centres with pet outlets in the UK. Or you could go a hardware shop like Wilkinsons (Wilco's) and buy a plastic "box".
Please don't buy a bowl, they are not really suitable for fish.
