No more than a year, and most Bettas live to be 5 years old.

Um...not that long if you keep feeding him goldfish food. Bettas are carnivorous and need a high amount of protein in their diet as compared to other fish. The goldfish food you're feeding him now doesn't have the nutritional protein that he needs.

You should go and get him some betta pellets - Hikari Bio-Gold or HBH Betta Bites are great choices and bettas love them. If you want to give him a treat, you can also get him some freeze-dried or frozen mosquito larvae or bloodworms, but don't feed this on a daily basis because it's too rich for their everyday diet...once a week would be great.

Ummm...You need to make sure you're giving the fish the right food, 'cause its probably not getting all the nutrition ect. it needs...It probably wont live long if you give it the wrong stuff. Mine had to get a certain kind of food, they lived about two years.

for about 2-5 years, it is not the food or the tank. the food doesn't really matter, as long as he eats it!
