Fish - July 2007

Hi.

I have been interested in tropical fish keeping for some time so I went out and got myself a small 10 gallon tank yesterday. I figured that I should start small and see how it goes. Most of the accessories (filter, etc.) came with the tank but I bought the heater separately and plan on getting the rest of the supplies probably some time tomorrow.

Here come the questions...

1. What tropical fish would be compatable with a 10 gallon tank? how many and of what species?

2. Should I set up the tank with the heater/filter running and let it stand for several days before I add any fish?

3. What about water purifiers? aside from the filter and heater, what other accessories/tests do I need to ensure that everything runs smoothly?

Any information you have on setting up a small tropical aquarium would be fantastic. My plan is (if all goes well during the set up) to purchase the actual fish this coming weekend.

Any advice is much appreciated.

I am thinking of adding a pond to my yard. I like the shape of this one http://www.maccourt.com/lowes/ponds/lp7918.html because where I would put it has something of a Y shape. I want to keep some goldfish in it, but I don't think 100 gallons is very big for fish and plants. I though about using just a flexible liner, but I worry about it getting a hole and the fish having no water.

Is it possible to use the premade one at the bottom and just sinking it about twice as deep, then using a liner inside so that if it does tear, the premade pond would still hold the fish and some water? Has anyone ever tried this? Or am I just worrying too much? I'd like something about 200-300 gallons total for the pond, plus a little waterfall at one end. Any suggestions on filters, UV, pumps as far as brands to buy or stay away from?

If I lost a fish in the filter, would I know it? A little background... I bought four platys yesterday. I got one that was soo cool looking. Spotted body, red top fin and yellow tail fin. He was very active. When I brought them home he was still very active. Seemed to have quite a personality. Didn't display any signs of being ill at all. This morning, he's gone. I can't find him anywhere. I have three other platys still in the tank and only a couple of plants so no real place for him to hide. I don't see how he could have gotten in the filter. He was too big and the bottom part of the filter tube in the tank has a sort of grate over it. But, this fish is gone. Completely. Any suggestions at all? If he somehow got in the filter, would I know it? Wouldn't it block up the impeller or something. He was over an inch in length. I'm at a loss here. I should add - the other fish in the tank are some guppies and neon tetras.

Apparently, my BF's son decided that my BF's African Ciclids were "sick", so he got "medicine" (Ick Guard) out of a cabinet and put it in the tank.

I have NO IDEA how much he put in the 55 gallon tank. The bottle of Ick Guard is 2 oz; there's about 1/2 ounce to a 3/4 ounce left. I have no idea how muhc was in there in the first place, but I think most of it landed on his shirt!

My BF's at work right now, and can only take emergency calls (his work won't think this is an emergency), so I need some help!

What can I do? Do you think he gave them an overdose? Can I change some water to help it???

HELP!

I really do not want to come off the wrong way, but I generally feel I know extensive knowledge about Arowana. I've spend countless hours watching, observing, caring for, and reading up about them. I do need some help/information though on this. I've done alot of reading up on diets for them, and I feel I have enough food to help them thrive well, with crickets, and some ants, krill, and bloodworms. When I was in the supply store last night, I noticed they stock some small frogs, and was wondering if anyone knew would putting frogs into the tank, with the idea of it being a food source for Arowanas, would this be considered a good or bad thing? Mine currently are about 8 inches each. These frogs should be small enough, for the most part to fit in thier mouths. Does anyone know if they would eat these, and if they would, would this be considered a good or bad source of food for them? I could not find anything published on the web addressing frogs as part of the diet.

It's been 3 days since I got them, and 2 of them are actively swimming and eating. One of them however still hasn't eaten, apears weak, and doesn't even go up to get food. I tried catching it with a net and feed it there so the others don't come grab it, but still no luck. What should I do?

I have a 55 gallon tank with 2 bio wheels, 12 plants, a heater, and the following fish:

1 bala shark
2 clown loaches
1 cory
2 guppies
1 gwarf gourami
1 angelfish
1 mickey mouse platy
3 neon tetras
1 sicilian worm
2 red glowfish

They all get along great!! my betta is in a 2 1/2 gallon tank which seems to get dirty very easily. The 2 1/2 gallon doesn't have a filter or anything other than fake plants and a rock that he sleeps in. Can i put him in my 55 gallon?? If not, what about a fantail goldfish?? I have a goldfish in another 2 1/2 gallon but this one has a fliter, so if the goldfish moves, then the betta can take her place. Which would be better??

I keep a 10 gallon tank with 4 guppies, 3 females and 1 male, 4 neon tetras and 2 black tetras. I recently noticed a problem with what appears to be ich, some of the fish have small white spots predominantly on their fins but some on their bodies aswell and some were thrashing their bodies off the gravel. I began dosing for this using Interpet Aquarium Treatment #6. I then began noticing some of the fish had become darkened around the body and mouth as if by ammonia burning. Having tested my water levels for Ammonia, Nitrate, Nitrite and pH and finding them ok I don't know what's causing this. Also 1 of the female guppies appears to be heavily pregnant and her spine has become curved towards the end of her body, is this natural in the latter stages of pregnancy or is it a broken back from thrashing off the bottom? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

my little sister starts college in the fall (ha, guess i can't call her lil sis anymore lol). she's studying to be a marine biologist so i think i want to get her an aquarium. I know that our mom and dad got her a 10 gal for her bedroom last year and she loves it, but she’s always wanted a salt-water. So I want to know what size I should get her, (it’s a privet dorm room), what kind of fish and accessories do you think she would like and what kind a fish would do well together? (I know that the tank has to be established for a week or two before adding the fish.) so, any suggestions guys? Thanks!

BTW I know that it's harder to get a smaller tank to set up for salt water...so would it really be better to just do a fresh water? if so, what accessories should i get and what fish do well together??

I have a 30 gallon aquarium with a Bio-Wheel type filter rated for 50 g. I live on the fourth floor in my apartment building and the aquarium sits on the floor. I take care of a large Orange Orada and a large Black Moor. I want to reduce my electric consumption so I am trying to avoid running the air conditioner as much as possible. The problem is that when outside temps are in the 80's and 90's (I live in Minneapolis, MN) the room temp. although lower than the outside temp is still high. I have 2 of those sticker type thermometers on the tank and I have seen the temp range from 70-84 degrees. I would like the tank to be in the low to mid 70's. Any ideas on how I can keep the temp down on these hot summer days??? I keep the hood light off all day and at this time I have a small fan blowing across the water surface to cool by evaporation. My only other idea is to get some of those reusable ice packs, put them in a ziplock bag and float 1 or 2 in the water. Thank You!!!!!!

I did about a 40% water change in my 10 gallon tank yesterday. The pH and ammonia levels were too high. How long do I have to wait before I can test the water again? I don't want to waste a few test strips if the water isn't ready.
