Yes, goldfish will change color on you unexpectedly. My best friend has this problem- he sees a great looking one at the pet store and two weeks later, it looks like a completely different fish. lol.
Genetics can play a role in the color-changing. Diet is also a factor in the coloring of a goldfish. Make sure you are feeding it good food that is specific for a goldfish and not general food that says for all fish or something like that.
Good luck!
(Despite what the one poster said, please do not move your tank towards sunlight. You're asking for all kinds of problems!)

Goldfish turn white when the lights go out so if you have left the fish in the dark for a while then come back in the room then it will look white.

Hi-nothing's wrong, despite their name Goldfish come in a variety of colours from black, thought brown, gold, orange, red & yellow to silver & white. Black Moors in particular often loose their colouration & turn lighter as black is the most recessive colour in them. This is one of the most exciting things about Goldfish, unless you have one from a particular bloodline they may change colour any time. My large male Comet spent 4 & a half years almost completely orange, then suddenly over the past 2 months he has decided to turn white underneath scale by scale & the change is so great it's almost noticeable day to day!

Goldfish generally do change colors as a result of genetics but temperature changes can and do affect fish coloration. My 2 goldfish turned completely white last summer. They are still very active and heathy. So you don't need to worry.

goldfish turn white because of lack of sunlight. Put his tank in a well lit room, and get him a tank light. The rays will turn him a lovely and golden again in no time.

They often change or loose color as they grow. Genetics. The fish is fine if he's acting fine.
