Well we had ours for several years! Anything over 5 years is probably a good thing. But they do tend to go paler as they get older!
But we made sure to give it a proper send off down the u-bend when it did pop it's clogs!

Typical lifespan in an aquarium ranges from days to months because nobody cares to learn about them. Just take a look at all the people who think 1 year or 6 years is a normal life for them. Premature death can largely be contributed to the myth that 'they grow to their environment'. Also, a poster above said 'they grow up to 8" long'. The longest currently living goldfish is not 8, but 18" long, and longer have been recorded in the past.
The average potential life span is in the range of 20-25 years, while they are capable of living over 30, and while it's rare, have been known to pass 40.

Goldfish can live up to 20 years. The reason most Goldfish die after a few months is because people keep them in tiny, unfiltered bowls (Goldfish get 8 inches long). If you put a large fish in a small bowl, it gets stunted and dies. With proper care (a 30 gallon tank), the average Goldfish should live more than 10 years.

the longest span of life that the world has recorded about goldfishes was about 45 years. (but most probably it was placed in its perfect habitat).. roughtly, 20-25 years would be the lifespan of goldfishes nowadays.=)
