Apparently, my BF's son decided that my BF's African Ciclids were "sick", so he got "medicine" (Ick Guard) out of a cabinet and put it in the tank.

I have NO IDEA how much he put in the 55 gallon tank. The bottle of Ick Guard is 2 oz; there's about 1/2 ounce to a 3/4 ounce left. I have no idea how muhc was in there in the first place, but I think most of it landed on his shirt!

My BF's at work right now, and can only take emergency calls (his work won't think this is an emergency), so I need some help!

What can I do? Do you think he gave them an overdose? Can I change some water to help it???

HELP!

If the water didn't turn blue, then I think not that much went in. To be safe, you can always remove about 1/4 of the water and replace with fresh. Good luck. Kids will try just about anything!

Change 75% of the water. Get some fresh carbon in the filter. Tomorrow also change 75% of the water. Replace carbon again in a week. That should do it.
Warn your BF the filter will have to recycle. Ammonia and nitrites may spike again so watch carefully over the next few weeks. Good luck. I'm glad the kid didn't mistake it for something to drink, or you would be asking a different question while sitting in the emergency room.

Filter carbon will remove the meds.
If there is a fairly recent carbon insert/sponge/cartridge in the filter it will already be working. If there is no carbon, or the carbon is over a month old, put some new carbon in the filter or in a pantyhose foot tied around the filter intake or outflow.

If there is a polyfilter - a branded toxin remover - in the cupboard that can be used instead of the carbon.

That's a pretty small dose for such a big tank actually.Don't worry about it,but keep an eye on them just in case.Tell your boyfriend when he gets home and he'll know what to do.You might have to change the water, but I'd let him decide that. The tank should be fine, but if there are snails in it it might effect them, can't remember if ick guard bothers them or not.

That small amount will not be a concern if there is carbon in the filter. If not, a 30% water change will certainly be adequate to dilute the medication.

it would not be a great problem.. check if your filter does have activated charcoals which can definitely remove the med. but on how big your tank is, there would be minimal affectation of the medication... don't worry too much...=)

enjoy and good luck=_)

wow crazy kids hahah.. But anyway a water change could help. do about a 20%-30% water change and you should be ok.

if you believe you overdose, then the only way is to do a partial water change.
