If I lost a fish in the filter, would I know it? A little background... I bought four platys yesterday. I got one that was soo cool looking. Spotted body, red top fin and yellow tail fin. He was very active. When I brought them home he was still very active. Seemed to have quite a personality. Didn't display any signs of being ill at all. This morning, he's gone. I can't find him anywhere. I have three other platys still in the tank and only a couple of plants so no real place for him to hide. I don't see how he could have gotten in the filter. He was too big and the bottom part of the filter tube in the tank has a sort of grate over it. But, this fish is gone. Completely. Any suggestions at all? If he somehow got in the filter, would I know it? Wouldn't it block up the impeller or something. He was over an inch in length. I'm at a loss here. I should add - the other fish in the tank are some guppies and neon tetras.

Also, there is a full hood on the tank - the only open area is where the filter attatches.

If he was sucked up by the filter, it would indeed block the impeller. It's possible he jumped ( they can get out the smallest spots) or jumped in to the filter box. Grab a flashlight and remove the cartridge for a moment to check it out. If he's not there, start looking under furniture.

sorry to say but i think uve just lost ur fish,it is very much possible for a platy to get into the filter in your case as there is no chance of it to jump off. so in order to confirm ill suggest switch off your filter and suck the water from the filter usin an external tube or something like that. and if that shows no sign,i think most probably ur fish got ill aft a couple of hours and probably got stuck and got sucked into the pump.a dead fish is not strong or capable of blockin the impeller instead[sorry to say this] gettin crushed by it..

if i were you, i would possibly be looking around the fish tank because that is the only possible way in which the fish would be lost. it would be imposible for the fish to be sucked up into the filter if it was that big ascompared to the tank filter. also, there would be alterations in your cycling process if the fish got into the pump... hence, the biggest probability is that the fish jumped out of the tank... they can actually jump out even in a 1*1 inch hole...

enjoy and hope you find your answer...

I did have a fish get sucked into the filter once, but only when I left the screen off of the intake tube while I was cleaning it. It made alot of noise, so if it happened you would probably know.

Well, if you discover a fish missing, ofcourse your going to look for it(or its body). If you cant find it anywhere in the tank. Might aswell check the filter?

I would check behind the tank..
Or go ahead and check in the filter just to see..
Since you just got them, it could be hiding in your rockwork or whatnot.. If you don't find him by tonight, start investigating..
With the other fish in the tank I doubt he's been eaten if he has in fact died..

i don't know anything about fish really, but is it possible that he was eaten? i don't know the temperments and behaviors of platys, so this is just a shot in the dark...but for someone at a loss it might be of help...:-)
