The more I read Q&A about fish the more I realize how little I know! Anyhoo next question...I've always used gravel in my fish tanks...thinking about it tho...sand might be a better option...
It would be harder for really big gunky stuff to get stuck in it...making the tank easier to clean...is this a correct assumption? It also would just look more natural...be easier to hold down decorations...at least in my mind this is how it all works out! I'm just attempting to verify my assumtions. As with all my questions...can anyone tell me the pros and cons of sand and gravel?

Does a betta's tank need filtering if you change the water every week? (3 gallon tank)

I have a Fluval 404 canister filter on my 55 gallon aquarium that I use for mechanical and chemical filtration.

I would like to add a chiller to the system. Is it possible to inline the chiller with the filter so I don't have yet another thing hanging on the back of my tank. Or is it better to have a dedicated pump for the chiller.

Converting to a sump is out of the question at the moment.

Ok i have had my fish for 3 days now. I got him from petco and everything that i use has been from there. He was doing fine when i first got him and the day after that. it's just him in the tank right now. i didn't QT him or anything. before i put in him though i did let him swim around in a bowl with the water i was using.

my Parameters are

pH 8.3
Salinity is 1.021
nitrate is 0.5
alkalinity is normal between 2.0 and 2.2
The temp stays between 79 and 80 degrees

Everything is normal and im looking at him and he seems like he's shedding and one of his fins have a white tip on them. im not sure if it's the water or if he's stressed. He eats normally and swims around alot. he stays in one place when i look at him or he goes and hides. it's just odd because when i got him he looked healthy and now he looks kinda sick. when the white stuff comes off of his body it looks like he did shed. whats all this mean?

i would really like some help in determining whats wrong with him

Is discus a really difficult fish to keep. I heard from many owners, that their maintenence is exaggerated . I have seen people keeping them without checking ph, testing water. There is a person who has 2 of the heckel's discus in green waters, high ammonia value < 60gallons at variable temperatures, being fed with dirty blackworms, along with angels, plecos, danios, I asked him, how his angels survive that conditions? He says the tank bred angels are tough can survive anything except bullies. Surprisingly he has them for over a year.

My gold severum is about ~3". How should I bring out red colour spots in it. do I have to feed it somethin special. Its regular diet consists of pellets, worms(tubiflex, black), dried shrimp, aquarium plants. Does that red color come only in males or both genders. At what size does it starts getting red spots.Heres th foto of my fish: http://www.flickr.com/photos/scratanut/546253752/

When I came to visit my relatives, I saw that they had gotten a pair of two exotic-looking fish. They look a bit stuffy in the tank of that size, so I was wondering if anyone knew what kind of fish they are so i can look them up, or know of a website that I could use. There is a picture of them here. http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c4/AmaMizuKitsune/1006.jpg

they get dirty and i find brushing them with a toothbrush is the only way to keep them really clean. but that takes too much time as i have lots for little pebbles.

I know that fish have gravid spots if theyre females and a long anal fin if it's male, but when fry are so, so young I cant see a long anal fin OR a gravid spot. I can start seeing gravid spots at a month old, and even then i see no long anal fins on the males (but I know by then because their siblings already have them) So how can I tell when theyre really little and only a few hours old?

She just had almost 30 fry! That is the most I have ever gotten or heard of! How many fry does a guppy usually have. For me it's been 2-12, but 30!?!

I am over whelmed! I have two 10 gallon tanks and now I'm going to have about 48 Guppies in all, plus theyre breeding again! I'm going to get a large tank, possibly 55+ so right now we're searching ebay and the newspaper!

P.S. whats strange about her fry is that it seems some of them are older, or more developed and mature than the others, like a month or a few weeks older, yet they were born at the same time. Can a guppy get MORE pregnant while it is already currently pregnant and then the first batch continue to develop inside their mother the same they would outside?

NO JOKE! She really did have almost 30! I counted 28 while moving them to the nursery, but there's more hiding in the breeding area for adults and guppies starting to sexually mature.

I have a Zebra Danio and he is very aggressive. So far he has gotten rid of a tetra and a betta and has even attacked a snail. I tried putting other zebra danios in with him but he still seems to be trying to pick fights. They are a slight different type of zebra danio, they have a longer split tail and larger fins on the side. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can calm him a bit? I am having a hard time getting him to stop attacking the others and they stay near the bottom so they dont even get food because he steals it all! I'm afraid I'm going to be burying another two fish :( Sad Days! Please Help!
THANKS!

ok, my butterfly koi's front fin(don't remember what you'd call it so, lets just say its one you'd concidered to be a fish' arm.

anyway that fin is stiff like a board and he seems to keep it close to his side.thats vthe only thing that seems to be wrong.

so does it sound like some kind of disase?which one(s)

or do you think he just injured it?
do you know of anything that could help it get better?

its been like this for over a week
