You want that tank to be filtered for the overall health of the fish. Betta's are very hardy fish, but they do as others have posted in here, get mistreated based on myths. You really should treat your Betta like any other tropical I feel. Give him ample space, and do not put him in a bowl, regardless of how many people will say thier Betta lived years in one. Give him some good filtration even though you are changing his water. Filtration will keep the water chemistry clear in the end of ammonia and nitrites and help keep him in better condition.

You have a choice basically, you can filter the tank and change about 25% of the water once a week or not filter the tank and change 100% of the water every 2-3 days. Personally, I would suggest you use some type of filtration on the tank as it will provide your fish with a much more stable and healthy environment.

Wow. Bettas kept in bowls commonly live 2-3 years, usually less, rarely more. But bettas kept in healthy living conditions can live 5-7 years. In comparison, two years is pitiful. If you want a healthy, thriving fish which will live to potential and beyond, then you would invest in the proper set up which includes about a 5 gallon tank, a gentle filter, and an aquarium heater. Goldfish are commonly kept in bowls as well and how many people know that they can live over 25 years? Not many because not enough bother to do their research and buy the necessary equipment.

All fish do better with a filter unless you change the water like you are supposed to do. I have my Betta's in filtered tanks. It is easier for me, I have 3 kids to keep up with so it cuts back some work during the week to have filters.

I would go with filtering in a small tank like I have, 3 gallons. That way, like others said, the fish are happier. Also, I found that in the beginning, when I had them in a bowl and had to change all the water every 2 days that it was a pain. It was annoying not only for me, but also for my betta. And I have one fish who is skittish and would freak out every time I changed his water because I had to take him out of it. As a result, he got a bacterial infection. Now that he is in a tank, I can clean it and never take him out. Plus, he enjoys following the gravel cleaner around the tank. So, go with the tank, a small one, for ease for you and the fish.

It does not need it, but it wouldn't hurt either. You would not have to change the tank out every week just clean the rock or gravel as needed. Bettas are just fine in a bowl and actually prefer smaller, darker areas. That is why they work so well in the plant, vase ensembles. At one time I had 6 of them, I had a 10 gal. tank with divider panels in it. Worked Great!!! you could watch all them at one time but they were safe from each other.

i keepbettas in 2 1/2 gallons that aren't filtered and change the water weekly and don't have any problems.

the filter would make less work for you though because you don't have to change water so often.

No. Change most or all of the water weekly, your betta will be rockin'! A filter might cause too much current for him.

You should always use a filter. It keeps the water clean as well as keeping your fish healthy.
