Fish - June 2007

I have a small algae eater (i would say about an inch long) and I cant find it anywhere! I have 4 fish, including the algae eater, in a five gallon tank, and they are all doing perfectly fine. I've looked everywere for the fish and i cant seem to find him. I dont think he could be dead, but i have gravel rocks and my family was thinking that he might be buried underneath them somehow. In my tank, i have this little car that is suppposed to look like it has algae and is all broken and stuff, and a tall, fake plant. I also have gravel rocks on the bottom. Ive seen him hiding on the little tube that sucks water into the filter, along the walls of the tank, and also on the car.

I have moved my guppies from a 10 gallon to a 50 gallon. I am breeding guppies to start nice strains; and the other guppies become food for convicts and oscars of friends and family. I now have a 10 gallon tank open and would like one to three fish in it that will eat guppies. What freshwater species do you recommend?

I am thinking of getting some tropical fish, but do not want to pay a huge bill for the electricity to run the heater for the tank.
How much electicity does the heater for the tank use? Would it be expensive?
I would have a medium/small tank.

New to aquariums as well. It has a florecent bulb in the hood, a heater that looks like a tube to put in the water .. and the filter looks broken, so I will be getting a new one alone with water conditioner, as I have chlorinated city water. Any other tips?

I will be needing to travel in the car with my 2 platies for about 3 hours. I'm moving so I don't really have a choice about it. How should I do it so that they survive and also so that I don't get water all over my car. Also I'm assuming I'm going to have to empty the tank.

Well i was at my friends house the other day and we went next door to go swimming...and the people set up there pool wrong so they were going to drain it in the next day or two. They live out where there is a lot of wild animals. So there is these tree frogs that snuggle into the crack of the pool all the time. The frogs then decided it was time to lay eggs and they layed all there eggs in the pool. And as i said they were going to drain the pool. So my friend and i decided to save as many as we could find. We found probally more then 10 of them. I bought food for them the other day..and it is tadpole food and frog food. But like the food seems to big yet for them to eat. i am scared that all the tadpoles are going to die and i want to save them. What do i do? and they are tiny right now...and i can see through there bodies and see there little black eyes. They also stick to the sides of the tank. Can you tell me the stages of the tadpoles and anything else i shold know...thanx!

I set up the tank for my African Dwarf Frogs today and when I put the thermometer in I noticed the temperature was just staying at 80 degrees. I tried shaking it down to 70 but it was really difficult. My question is do mercury thermometers go down as the temperature gets colder? Or do you have to keep shaking it?

I am almost 15; born into a digital thermometer world lol so I dont know much about the mercury ones.

It began about a week, or so ago. The fish was always strange. Swimming up & down the glass as if looking at it's reflection. So when it began swimming very oddly, I didn't think much at first. The poor fish was SPINNING very fast on it's "beak", and did this non-stop, as well as some other seemingly uncontrolled movements, and dives. Like I said, it did this for a week, and progressivly got "worse", much less active, and eventually just completely handicapped in it's abilities. He died today. I had him a few months now, with no real problems. I didn't change his diet, or environment or tank mates. Any clue?

I have 3 left, and they all have dark colored bulges at the bottom of their bodies, they all look healthy despite the others died! Are they pregnant? I haven't seen any babies is so long! Also, if you do not have any purifier, how do you add water to the tank? Mine is small, and they are running out of water!!

I have a 70 gallon mixed African cichlid tank. I admit I was a bit premature adding m 25 fish but now the levels are confusing me. I had about 1ppm Nitrite and Ammonia when I added half the fish. I waited for the levels to come down to about .5ppm to add the rest. The levels have never been optimal in the tank...but thats just the precursor to the problem. Now the tank doesn't seem to be producing the Nitrate that it used to. It was putting out a solid 40ppm when I would check every two days, now its down to about 5ppm. Ammonia is currently <.25ppm and Nitrite is still hanging at 1ppm. I have done two smaller water changes and conditioned with Prime (which detoxifies the Nitrite and Ammonia) so the fish seem fine, all eating well and acting normal. When I added the second half of the fish, over two days I added a flask sized bottle of Nitromax to the tank. Levels did not change much. Now, for the past few days I have been adding another bacterial supplement. I need help...

do you think it should be illegal to easily purchase "tank-buster" fish? i am particularly thinking of fish like pacus or any of those fish that grow to gargantuan size. i cannot imagine, except ignorance, why someone would get a pacu that can get three feet long. very few people have to money to keep these fish when they get to their adult size. i know several stores in my area that sell cute baby pacu that are like 6 inches long without any labels that says there size. i think that any animal like this you should have to get a special permit. what do you think?
