Don't put anything but other varieties of African cichlids in the tank. As others have said, they are aggressive and will kill other non-aggressive fish. I have a 70 Gallon tank with 25 African cichlids from all three lakes. I suggest that you find a Local fish store that has a good selection of species and just pick and choose from the different colors temperaments and diets. Trophs are really cool...get a group if you want them to be at there prime. Mbuna are the typical Africans and they are a fun starter fish. If your advanced, go with a Tanganyikan community, with some calphius and frontosia and shell dwellers...however they might be hard to find and you may have to order them on the internet.

Have fun.

Look at the Lake Tanganyika group for some really different species. Neolamprologus Brichardi or its cousins are beautifully shaped fish that swim mid-water. The Julidichromis groups are easy to spawn, and have some intriguing habits and they stay close to the rock work. There are some open water species that do well in large schools and add interest to a Tanganyika display. Frontosa are large and slow, but are best kept in a species tank.A 100 would be good for three or four. Find a good reference book on the lake and you'll probably find a lot more interesting stuff,(The Shell Dwellers for instance). Most of these fish are a little more costly than "Assorted Africans" found at the "big box" stores but they are much more rewarding. If you are not already a member The American Cichlid Association is a great source for both information and quality livestock. Good luck, have fun with your fish!-----PeeTee

I would say get a variety of African Cichlids. Electric yellows and electric blues are always nice. As well as some Kenyis. I have an Ice Blue Zebra that's very pretty. Basically, stick to Malawians and African cichlids.

You really cannot put much with African Chiclids because they are aggressive but you can put other African fish with them.
