I have a small algae eater (i would say about an inch long) and I cant find it anywhere! I have 4 fish, including the algae eater, in a five gallon tank, and they are all doing perfectly fine. I've looked everywere for the fish and i cant seem to find him. I dont think he could be dead, but i have gravel rocks and my family was thinking that he might be buried underneath them somehow. In my tank, i have this little car that is suppposed to look like it has algae and is all broken and stuff, and a tall, fake plant. I also have gravel rocks on the bottom. Ive seen him hiding on the little tube that sucks water into the filter, along the walls of the tank, and also on the car.

They will hide where there is the most algae, so probably somewhere you don't clean often. If you have a lot of algae on your tank walls, that is where it will be, but if you have undersides of decorations that you never clean, algae will build up and it will hide there until the algae is gone. A 5 gallon tank is way to small for Algae Eaters which get about 6 inches long... also, I am guessing if you put an Algae Eater in a 5 gallon, you probably have other fish in there that are way too big for it... Email me at "nosoop4u@cox.net", let me know what fish you have, and I'll tell you what you need to get rid of.

If you haven't tried looking here already, look up under the part of the filter where the water comes out. He may also be inside the car, just somewhere that you don't see him.

Another possibility is that he was a jumper - try looking inside the filter, and anywhere right around the outside of the tank (including the floor).

Ciclids are particularly territorial fish, and could probable rigidity the algae eaters nuts, or kill them. i could advise a miles less agressive species, like guppies, or tetras in a community tank.

They are very shy, if you sit away from the tank, you will see it work.
