Beta fish or siamese fighters can be kept in an unheated tank if they are kept between 60F and 75F. I have kept fighters in tanks with out heaters and they have bred at 60F. They come from areas as diverse as Sigapore and Korea. They live in the ponds and rice paddies, they have a special organ which alows them to breath air if the water becomes starved of oxygen. This is called a labyrinth and is also found in gouramis and paradise fish..
They are classified as a tropical fish but can survive at cooler temperatures.

Yes they are tropical fish. They need to be kept between 76-82 F at all times. Most people claim their Betta is sluggish and not moving around alot. This is caused by water that is too cold for them. I am sure he will love his new home!

Yes they are tropical, and your Betta will really appreciate the bigger home, just make sure not to put any fish with long fins in with him, or he will attack them. Also, any fish notorious for fin-nipping will quickly destroy your Betta's beautiful fins.

yesh they are tropical fish. they don't get along very well with fish that nip and big fish that want them for a snack. in general they are major wimps when it comes to other fish though. if you are planning to mix him with other fish pick his friends wisely
