I'm looking to stock a 4-5 gallon freshwater, coldwater aquarium with a few schooling fish. Is it possible? What fish would you recommend?

I am going to Petco today to get a fish, and it needs to be a freshwater fish, is there any other freshwater fish they would have there besides goldfish?

What needs to be done to disinfect the tank? Is there a way to "wash" the plastic aquarium plants and gravel, or should they be replaced? Do I need to get a new bio-filter?

I recently purchased my children a 20 gallon aquarium and 3 of the fancy goldfish, and they appear to be doing well. Tip to tail each is currently about 2 inches.
My questions are:
When I was younger my tank not only had a filter but an aerator as well - this "full set-up" I purchased did come with one. Is the filtration system enough, or should I consider an aerator for better fish health and happiness?
My second question is what kind of fish co-habitate nicely with goldfish? My children have been eyeing up some neons and other tropicals but I have held off because of other fish already in the tank.

I keep tank temp at about 75-76 degrees.

Any advice would be appreciated - I want happy kids and happy fish....lol

I have had a anemone for 2 weeks now. He's been eating and everything seemed great. When I came back from the weekend (at work) he looks purpleish blue and alot smaller. I tested the water quality and everything is right. What could be wrong?

ok. I have a clown pleco, a spotted raphael catfish, and 2 comets.

I know these fish get huge, so I will be taking them back at around 5-6 inches ( except for the clown pleco, because that's his adult size ) .... the temp. of the tank is at 72. ( room temp. )

can a rosy barb, live with the fish I mentioned?

thanks

from what i've read its all over the place. i want colourful fish such as neon tetras but have been told they can't live with other fish i would like. the main ones im interested in having are:
neon tetras and others
dwarf and other gouramis
moons
mollies
swordtails
glass fish
possibly catfish
also i was looking at fish or possibly snails that will help in keeping the tank clean.

It is now a fresh water tank with one very mean fish. I'm giving the fish away and decided I'm going to make the jump to saltwater. I have been doing a little research but I'm still confused. This will be a fish only tank. Do I need live rock? Will an over the back filter work? Do I really need a sump and a skimmer? What is a sump?

Ideally I would like a nice tank with a few pieces of fake coral, two fish at the most. I'm really confused about all the filters. I understand that undergravel filters are a no-no, I'm clear on that one. I would really like to get away with just having a over the back filter. I have room in the hood for one designed up to 100 gallons.

i want the most colourful and best looking fish. i know salt water fish and reef fish look better but i am just starting out and a salt water tank will be too complicated for me to maintain. also are trutles hard to look after and can they live in a tank with fish?

as I said, fish is swollen on one side and that side faces up so that the fish swims on his side. he has been this way for 8 days. it is a very large oscar, approx. 10 inches.

I recently went to my local pet shop (just to look around at some of the new animals they got in, lemurs, monkeys, etc.) and they had seahorses.

Does anyone have any idea how to raise them? I'd rely on the clerk, but to be honest, 90% of them are idiots.

How big of a tank do they need?
Freshwater?
How about plants?

Thanks!

I just purchased a betta. He is currently in a 2.5 gallon q tank. When I'm sure he is healthy, I want to put him in my ten gallon divided tank with my other betta. The scales on his head look funny. I turnned the lights in the room of and put a flashlight on him... it looked like he had tan spots on him. Is that the 'gold dust' i've read about or normal betta colloring? Any advice would be appreciated.

All the aquarium inhabitants seem to be swimming around pretty contently despite their enormous bellies. So, my question is this:
Alright, here's the deal: I left my dorm for 2 days and asked my roommate to feed my fish. I came back today and she had overfed the **** out of them!! Ahhhhh! I dumped at least 15 betta pellets out of the old water, and he's only supposed to get 5 a day. My two African Dwarf frogs are overfull to the point where their sides are lumpy and you can see the pink pellet color of their stomaches through their skin. The frogs are normally fed bloodworms once every few days. Ugh.

I know the squished pea trick, but what can I do for the frogs?
How concerned should I be?

to replace my school of Tiger Barbs? They are making life miserable for my other fish. I have a 30 gal tank with 2 dwarf gouramis, 3 rosy barbs, and an iridescent shark. The Tigers are being moved to another tank because they keep nipping the others. Why didn't the schooling thing work with them? I thought in a school of 5 or more they'd leave everybody else alone. I have 5. I'd like a really cool fish or another school that can get along with the tankmates.

I thought about mixing in a few gallons of natural spring water (like they sell at WalMart for 88 cents a gallon) with my tap water to fill my tank. The tap water alone is very hard. Will that work? It's a 30 gallon tank. What ratio would be good?
