Oh my!! You HAVE to keep the filter running 24-7! You can't turn it off and then back on again.....a filter keeps your water clean, and your fish healthy, and promotes A 'LITTLE' NOT MUCH oxgen.......you need to wait at LEAST 48 hrs.....but truthfully the longer you can wait the better.....you might want to invest in a 'starter kit' for your tank, it;s a liquid that you can put in your water that has the ammonia and etc. that your fish need to live on...if you cannot wait, you can put hardy fish in your tank to break it in quicker for you , such as barbs, tetras,or black mollies.

The filter should be on constantly for a variety of reasons (water circulation, removal of waste, aerate). I have experienced that when you turn of your filter frequently, some of the dirt in the tank as well as the dirt in the tubes (stuck by the vacuum effect when filters on) would move into the tank (reverse flow to reach equilibrium)

I had the annoyance of the waterfall for a full week because the tank was in my bedroom. What i did to solve this problem was to add/subtract water up to the point where the lip of the outgoing part of your filter is AT or a few mm below water level. This way reduces the waterfall effect (the creation of bubbles and loud splashing noise. It is not DEAD silence, but it is WAY better than hearing loud splash noises from the waterfall.

Your filter needs to run 24/7, you should run it at least a week before adding any fish. only add 1 or two fish at first so your tank can cycle. You can go to any pet store and buy bacteria to get your tank to cycle a little faster but 1 week is still good to wait. As for the annoying waterfall noise, add more water to your tank, the higher the water level the less noise it makes.

Filters must run continuously, here's why, they only work to remove ammonia from the tank when they contain live bacteria,it'll take you about 5 weeks to grow a complete set.(Both kinds.) Now, they need oxygen to survive and to do their work.(Keeping your fish alive.) If the filter is off for more than two hours they start to die off, if it's off for twenty-four hours they are all dead. Then you have to start the cycling process all over(constant ammonia testing, even more water changes, dead fish, you know, all that stuff.) Be sure to cycle your tank before adding fish, and keep the filter running all the time.-----Good luck.-----PeeTee

Your filter needs to run 24/7. It will contain a major portion of the bacteria needed to keep the ammonia and nitrites in the tank in check and anything less than 24/7 will not allow that to happen.

its best to keep it running if you do not like the sound you can put some scotch tape on the return line to the water level and it will trickel down and diminish the noise along with creating the desired wave like effect.
