I'm looking to stock a 4-5 gallon freshwater, coldwater aquarium with a few schooling fish. Is it possible? What fish would you recommend?

I would suggest White Clouds. Even though they will exceed an inch, your tank will support a small school of 5-6 with no problem at all assuming you do your regular weekly water changes of course.

I agree with not having 5 fish in a 4-5 gallon.

3 Zebra Danio would be a great collection.

You are limited on the number due to size and the temperature here. Which ever you choose, I would not go with more than 3 of fish you choose. Watch guppies as well since they will reproduce quickly.

Two female betta's could work.

White Clouds yes. Danios no. Both are small cool water fish. Danios are very active swimmers. They would be absolutely MISERABLE in anything with less than 24" and preferably 30" to swim back and forth, which never seems to end with them. Don't put 'em in a tiny tank. I wouldn't suggest anything in a tank that small, but if you must, Danios are a poor choice.

Rather than schooling fish, how about a nice colorful pair or trio of killifish. The varieties are unbelievable and they will do well in a five gallon tank.

Like MM said,White Clouds come the closest to fitting your criteria. There are smaller fish, like Endler's Livebearers that would be smaller than White Clouds, but would at least need to be in a relatively warm room(72 F),to be OK. Check the American Livebearers Association's web site for more suggestions.----Good luck---PeeTee

FIrst of all I wouldn't suggest trying to put a school of fish in a 5 g tank. I suggest a 10-15 gal. at least. Make sure your filter is strong enough. Smaller tanks tend to get dirtier faster. If you want a small schooling fish i suggest neon tetras. They are relatively easy to care for. All they need is a tank, heater set to 72-74 (f) and a good filter. I would get a few plants too. Please research more about these fish before buying.

I think white clouds ( as MM said ) would be your best bet.

they can live in 61F-72F. and they only grow around 1.5 inches.

good luck
