One thing no one has addressed here is that Piranha are schooling fish and need to be kept in a group. You shouldn't get just one, but instead you need a group of 6 or more. That will require a good sized tank of about 90 -150 gallons or possibly more depending on the species you get.

Feeders are a possible source of disease in your tank and should be quarantined for a week or s before use to be sure they aren't carrying any obvious disease. Other sources of food would include fish fillets and beef heart. Both available from the grocery store and certainly cheaper than feeders.

Good points above about including some veggies in their diet.

Also, please remember, piranha are shy fish. They are not dangerous and will not attack a healthy target unless really hungry. In nature they are scavangers that feed off of dead and dieing fish or animals.

You are right that they are omnivores :) Best bet to duplicate his life in the wild is to provide a high quality processed fish food, frozen or freeze dried foods like krill, bloodworms, etc. Piranha also eat the following vegetarian meals: sliced raw zucchini, spinach and raw potato.
As for amounts: piranha need to be fed once a day. When feeding their staple foods, only leave in the tank what your fish will eat in 2 minutes. For the vegetables, they may be left in the tank for up to 3 hours before it starts to decay.
Also, make sure you do 10 - 15% water changes weekly to clean up any mess :)

Well pirhanas are dangerous to have ill start with that so be careful if you have kids as they might get bitten. Second, you can feed them blood worms about 3 times a day or pellets 3 times a day if your going to buy them. feed them goldfish once a month to keep them aggressive
