A lot of people misconstrue the goldfishes uncontrolled eating to be a sign of lack of intelligence, and there are several "myth" about them having short memories.
Nothing could be further from truth!
Goldfish can actually recognize their owner and have even demonstrated their learned ability to beg for food when the owner come near the aquarium. They may also exhibit recognition by coming close to the glass wall or circle around the surface of the water. They will also show fear of strangers by hiding.
Goldfish have also been noticed to show social behavior. A new fish in the tank may be chased or nipped at. After a while though, fishes might show schooling behavior. They also exhibit similar feeding habits when they have been living together for some time.

The "3-second memory" of goldfish is an all-too-common misconception. There are a whole slew of recent studies proving that fish have a much longer short-term memory than people previously thought, and can actually learn and remember tricks for up to 3 months!
If your fish seems to "recognize" you when you come into the room, it's pretty likely that he's associating you with feeding and that's why he gets so excited... Very cute though, isn't it?

Actually they do learn to recognize people and will expect food from their owner. Some will even move to the other side of the tank when a stranger or child is in the room. Depends upon what they have been conditioned to do.

Most Goldfish including koi, fancy tails, and everything else, have extremely short memories lasting up to a day (MAX and pushing it)
They can however associate a person with feeding and thats about it, they cant do tricks that dont associate with feeding, they cant recognize you, all they can do is get a small impulse from their brain saying its feeding time. I personaly HATE GOLDFISH which is why i have several Giant cichlids which i feed over 500 goldfish a week

I don;t know if they recognize individuals or not, but there seems to be plenty of anecdotal evidence that they do. They certainly recognize that people feed them and react the way they do in an effort to get food.

No their brains have very little capacity so they barely remember their way around the fish tank, if he goes crazy then he probably is just plain...well crazy!
