i have a 50 gallon tank. i used an undergravel filter with 3 plates and tubes (for 50 gallon tank) powered by 2 precision PR 9500 airpumps and also have a precision dual overhead filter which used two submersible powerhead pumps. they seem to be working fine, but is this too much filtration? im afraid i might be getting rid of the nitrates...

I'm just setting up a knew 90Gal tank, the guy at the pet store said it would be ok for fish after cycling only 24hrs. I had always thought more like a week, adding little bits of food to induce the nitrogen cycling. I'm trying the Fluval FX5 for this tank, any feed back on this filter. Thanks to all those who answer these questions, your awesome.

My tank has been up and healthy for about two months. Until now, everyone has gotten along well. We've even saved fry from two different births that seem to be doing well. Our Molly has now begun to nip at the tail of one of our guppies. I'm not sure if he does it to the others. (The adults each have a teeny tear in their tails, but nothing like the first one.) His tail is completely frayed and MUCH smaller. I didn't notice until yesterday. I didn't know what to do, so I put the molly into our birthing net by himself. (We had previously put a divider in our tank to give the fry more room to grow.) Will the poor guppy survive? Can he heal? Will we have to get rid of our molly? Help!!!

I'm interested in breeding Mollies, I've researched it and it seems fairly easy, I'm just waiting until after spring break to start. My only question is: What is the smallest size tank I can get away with will breeding them?

After loosing my Beta fish, I had a full range of water tests done. It turns out that the pH is to low, (at 6) and the gH is critically low (at virtually 0) even though I had a does and a half of mineral salt in the tank. (I can’t remember what it’s called, but it’s designed to raise the gH.)

Obviously I can’t keep a fish in the water that we have with out some serious treatment… But I’m unsure if I’ll be able to manage the pH, and gH.

How hard is it to artificially raise and maintain pH levels? (To around 7.5)
And if my tap water is so soft that it’s going to take a quadruple dose of mineral salt to bring it up to liveable condition, how hard will this be to monitor and maintain?

My male betta, Junior is the sole occupant of a 5gallon tank. We got him a week ago. I haven't done any water changes yet.
He eats well, is active, keeps flaring at his own shadows and builds bubble nests.3-4 days after I got him, I noticed a split in his tail fin. I couldn't figure out why it happened. I asked a question here regarding the same, and someone told me it could be fin rot and someone else told me it could just be an injury cos it was too early for fin rot as the water was only 3-4days old and he had been perfectly fine the previous night (considering it occurs due to dirty water)This morning I noticed more splits and I can't understand the reason. Could it be an injury? Or something else? Are their fins really so delicate so as to tear when in contact with rough/bumpy/harsh surfaces like an ornamental aquarium cave? If it is an injury, will it heal on its own? What can I do to help him? Also, he is very aggressive and keeps flaring inspite of his tail.

I have a 50 gal. acrylic planted aquarium with 12 fish(2 red-eye tetra, 3 other kind of tetra,1 black molly, 1 silver molly, 2 blue mickey mouse platys,2 algea eaters, 1 albino cory catfish) and an african frog..I use a Magnum 350 Pro Canister filter, heater, w/1 18" bubble wand.... What are pros and cons of using aquarium salt? Would you consider it beneficial to the aquariums ecosystem? Can the salt be used if you have plants? Will the salt muck up my filter and my bio-wheels? Does the salt do anything to help make tap water safer for the fish?

Oh my, I apologize for so many questions.. For my fishes sake, I need to know..!.!.! Thanks! Much Appreciated!

I am currently soaking some dried split peas, but they will take a little while to moisten. Will lettuce work until then? Will the constipation kill my fish if I don't take care of it soon, and if so, how long do I have?

Other than that blue stuff that stains the items and silicone in the tank, how can you help your fish to get better without making them worse or killing them? Any suggestions??

my goldfish, carrot, is sick. he (she?) lives in a 10 gallon tank with stripe, who is perfectly healthy. carrot had some white stuff growing on his tail and fins, so we've been treating them w/ maracyn (and cleaning the water regularly). the white stuff seems to have cleared up, but carrot hasn't eaten in, i don't know, 2+ weeks. are there any tricks to get him to eat again? he is so lethargic, and now he just hangs around at the top of the tank like he's gasping for air. if only he would eat something, then maybe he could get better.

please help if you can!
thanks,
amy
