my goldfish, carrot, is sick. he (she?) lives in a 10 gallon tank with stripe, who is perfectly healthy. carrot had some white stuff growing on his tail and fins, so we've been treating them w/ maracyn (and cleaning the water regularly). the white stuff seems to have cleared up, but carrot hasn't eaten in, i don't know, 2+ weeks. are there any tricks to get him to eat again? he is so lethargic, and now he just hangs around at the top of the tank like he's gasping for air. if only he would eat something, then maybe he could get better.

please help if you can!
thanks,
amy

He may not be eating because he's still just not feeling well. Maybe not only because of the fungus, but also because of other factors. He's already been weakened, so little things are going to affect him more easily. Do you filter the water? Is he gasping because there is no oxygen in the water? The 10 gallon tank for 2 goldfish is way too small. You should have at least a 20 gallon tank. You may have an ammonia spike. Have you tested the water? Medication will destroy the nitrogen cycle and you have to recycle the tank all over again. Do a 50% water change and get a master test kit and see what your water parameters are. Btw... I like the name "Carrot." Cute! Good luck!

Somethings bothering his gills maybe its the maracyn. Get it out of the system and start a salt treatment and raise the temp to 83 degrees.
Go ahead and add 1 tablespoon per gallon of non-iodized rock salt (kosher or ice cream salt will do) See if he comes around in a few days. Next time don't put that stuff in your tank. You have killed your filter and the tank may be recycling. That's why you should use salt instead of that crap the pet store sold you. GF not eating is a sure sign he's on the way out. I've seen them pretty sick and they still would eat. In the future please do regular weekly water changes (25% or more). Clean stable water will prevent your fish from getting sick in the first place.

Buy every kind of brand or ask the petstore person what they were feeding it, then buy that kind. Then your carrot will eat it!
