my friend has lent me a heater until tomorrow, but its only a 50watt, i want to maintain some kind of temperature for my tropical fish, until i can get a new one tomorrow, ive a 30 gallon tank, i know this heater is not right for my tank, what would you set it at

Honestly unless you house is really cold the temp in the tank won't go down quickly. Just put in the 50 watt at the temp you want, and place it near your filter water output. If you house isn't really cold the 50 watt may work just fine. (I'd not use a 50 watt long term as it will burn out quicker.)

PS- I'm not aware of any heater in the fish trade that puts out more heat based on what you set it to. They are simple on/off devices. The temp drops below your setting it turns on. Above it turns off.

Set it to the temperature you want to maintain. It will run almost continually, but you don't want to risk over heating the tank and turning it up higher will not make it heat faster. Water losses heat rather slowly, even with just 50 watts you should be just fine until tomorrow.
