I just set up a new 10 gallon tank ( i did not opt for a heater). I know that I should cycle the tank and add a good harty fish first before slowly introducing more. But what? I want alge eaters as well. And what about snails? Do they do anything?

A while back, I bought one of those starter 10gal tank kits (not tropical, no heater necessary) at PetSmart.

I read all the instructions that came with the tank and followed them meticulously, including using tap water (I did put in all the solutions that came with the tank). I started up the filter, then waited a week before putting in the fish (4 fish, just the common varieties you find at PetSmart).

One of the fish had those bubbly eyes, and one of his eyes was damaged when I put him in. Within a week, he died. Then I bought an aquatic plant at PetSmart, and put that in. Within another week, all 3 of the other fish died as well. They would stop eating first, then stop having the ability to swim (so they would just float around), then die. I cleaned out the tank (no soap).

Someone told me it was the tap water, so I bought 10 gallons of purified water and put that in. Bought 4 more fish at PetSmart. Within two weeks, they were dead too. I gave up. What happened?

I want to stack rocks into a cave formation in my 30 gallon hex, but the rocks at the pet shop are way too expensive. And the plastic ones look stupid. Any ideas

she is a white oranda. I watch her and all of a sudden she speeds off around the tank then stops dead and starts flicking her dorsal fin and shaking it really fast, she'll do this for a few minutes about 6 times a day

The store I bought him at had two tanks of these fish, one labelled "small" and one labelled "large". I'm not sure whether that refers to age or just size. The fish I bought is tiny, only about 2 inches in length, hoever he was in the tank with the "large" fish. The "small" tank was empty, so I'm not sure if they consolidated and put him in with the larger fish, or if he's just a young fish. I know he's supposed to be a Black Moor, but he's bright silver, with very few black spots here and there. He has the same physical features as the large fish, just not hte color. Does anyone have experience with these fish? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
