Most aquarium fish breeding in the US is done in south Texas and in Florida ( Florida is by far the largest supplier) These fish are then sold to wholesalers around the country that supply large chain stores and local pet shops. Some smaller pet shops buy whatever fish are available from local breeders thus usually getting healthier stock and a better selection.

Many, many additional fish are imported from overseas breeders or from suppliers that catch wild fish.

PetSmart used to have local breeders for angels due to the difficulty of keeping them healthy after shipping. However, they have since improved upon shipping procedures and are able to do it by distributing centers.

Petsmart has large warhouses for products and for aquatic pets. The distributing center has a fully fledged facility that acts as a pit stop for fish. Fish are purchased overseas and from Florida hatcheries. The fish are shipped the the distributing center where they are kept for observation, isolation, and holding. The PetSmart store then places an order. The order is picked, bagged, and placed in boxes with liners filled with air. The shipment is then sent out and the stores put them out for sale. All in all, the process can take a couple weeks.

Angel fish are drip acclimented at PetSmart so as to gradually adjust them to the water quality of the store. This helps reduce losses and stress.

Not all PetSmarts get pets from the same source, however, one distributing center will serve the entire district. Any differences in angel quality from store to store is a result of the care given, not the breeder.
