It actually goes on the outside of the tank and you can use clear scotch tape or even a clear glue.

If you're talking about the plastic strip (about 2" wide) that goes along the entire back of the tank that fits into the top, it should have grooves that fit into the ledge on the inside of your tank's frame. I had the exact question myself!!

if you are talking about a back drop type decoration, it has to be cut to the size of the back of the tank and can be taped on with clear tape.
