My five-year-old German Shepherd, a magnificent dog that barely two weeks ago was chasing rabbits through the brambles with reckless abandon, is about to be put to sleep with an insidious disease called Degenerative Myelopathy. A couple of days ago he awoke unable to walk. He stumbled, dragged his knuckles, and suffered the ignominy of being unable to relieve himself without help. The progression of the disease was frighteningly rapid; which may be a blessing for the dog, but makes the sadness in this house palpable.

To others suffering similar tragedies, I may not know you, cannot hold you, but just know that there are others who share your despair.

My two seem to be coping very well since my mum died recently, but I have to be careful not to say "Mum" or they'll expect to see her. I'm sure they'll never forget her, but do dogs accept that some people just won't come back again?

She possibly is just allergic to fleas or something if she has them but i doubt we'll see the vet cause it's not life threatening. So has anyones bet had this before and can tell me what it is and if there a cheap quern?

I'm ten and is this animal abuse? Okay this guy that lived next door had to dogs one was a adult and one was a puppy. After about two months they began to get REALLY skinny. We called the vet but they would'nt come out to see them. The older dog began to get sick....He died. The little puppy would jump the fence and run over to my house and claw the door just so he could have the a little food. The Puppy also died of hunger. Two or three months later the guy comes home with another puppy. He chained the dog up with a bowl of water and scrapes. When the dog was done with the water and food it didn't get anymore. I gave it food just to keep it alive. Then AGAIN the guy brought home another dog! Now I had to fed two dogs just to keep them from dieing!!!!!!!! The dogs survived because I fed them. Soon after the guy got his house fourclosed so he had to move. He left the dogs there though..... I found them both a home. But I'm just wondering if this is animal abuse.

There are a tons of poorly bred dogs out there, but which breed or breeds do you think have suffered the worst fate of having the highest ratio of poorly bred dogs versus dogs that meet the breed standard?

And on the flip-side, which breeds do you think have the highest percent of quality animals?

I've had a lot of dogs - used to breed, actually - and have had everything from Icelandic Sheepdogs to German Shepherds to Tibetan Spaniels to Border Collies, etc.

I honestly have to say the best one's I've had - in terms of just "living a peaceful life" have got to be a Shih Tzu and Golden Retrievers, and if I had to pick between the two, I think I'd actually go for the Shih Tzu.

We currently have five dogs, including a hound mix. We love him so much, but he's really a pain to manage. The Rottweiller/Shepherd mix is probably the best dog (he's a "dog's dog", but he's very intimidating to strangers. Overall, as stupid as it seems, I think I like the Shih Tzu best.

I have had a Golden, and would go for that too. I also used to have a scottish sheepdog, but it was a car chaser (and a car caught him) - lots others too. They all have their bright spots, but for overall compatability, I'm saying Shih Tzu, or maybe Golden R.

I think he's wonderful, with amazing results. If you don't know who i mean watch BBC3 at 6pm. He'll cure all your dogs problems. Calm assertive energy - it's all you need. Long live Cesar....

I've always had large dogs and we let them off leash at dog beaches etc. But I saw some pretty awful fights and some small dogs hurt. Now we have two little dogs, one is verging on tiny, and I just don't think it's safe. Especially as one of my dogs is quite dominant and while he wouldn't attack he wouldn't roll over. What do you think?

It was snow storming here like crazy the other nite, so I came in and let my dog out of the garage to go on a pee run and I didnt leash him because it was late and I figured he would like to pee and get in the house. Well, he vanished. The wind was blowing 30 miles per hour. Snow was falling and the dog split. I yelled for 3 hrs until I gave up finding him and went to bed thinking he died in the snow storm. NOT. He headed to the neigbors house and they let him in. He was gone all nite, then when I got up in the AM, they let him into the garage and put a blanket on top of his straw mound. He was sleeping in because when I went out that morning to feed him, he didnt even bother to get up for his food. He was all stretched out in the straw. Should I tell them to bring my dog home the next time, or am I being pathetic? No I am not an abusive dog owner. We live in rural america with outdoor dogs unless the weather is terrible, then they sleep in the house or the barn or the garage

Is it harmful for a dog to ingest charcoal? We just realized our dog (4 month old Miniature Daschund puppy "weenie dog") ate almost an entire brick of charcoal. I think it is the self-starting kind, but am not sure. We are unable to contact a veterinarian right now because it is after midnight. She seems fine right now, but I am scared it is going to kill her! I have done a search online and haven't had much luck finding anything helpful. PLEASE HELP! Thanks!

If you could create (and enforce) ANY dog related law, what would it be? Why would you choose this law? What would this law prevent/what problem would this law solve? What would be the requirements of this law? Why would this law be hard to reinforce?

I mean laws such as mandatory spay/neuter for pet quality dogs...having to obtain a breeding license before being allowed to breed dogs...having to obtain a dog owning license before being able to own dogs...having to prove you can financially support a dog before buying one...you get the point.

Be creative! It can be any law, no matter how crazy or impossible it sounds. What law do YOU think would help solve the dog related problems that our society sees on a daily basis (abuse, neglect, dog attacks, irresponsible breeding)?

I went to Jackson, MS, and showed a client's Cattle Dog...he won WD/BOW two of the three days he was entered...:-) Only 3 singles to go!

This was the last show weekend of the year...and a VERY successful year for me and my clients: (3) Championships finished, (2) RN Titles, (1) PT Title, (1) HT Title, several dogs pointed, numerous group placings and many bests of breed wins! "And a partridge in a pear tree..." LOL

So, did you show your dog this weekend? Where are you planning on going in January?

My 2 year old Dachshaund sometimes wheezes pretty bad like he can't catch his breath. I got him from the humane society about 3 months ago. He doesnt do a lot but when he does do it its pretty bad. The last time he did it I was walking him outside in the cold and he started wheezing pretty bad. He did it just about the whole walk, which is about a half mile. Ive heard that small dogs tend to have trouble breathing sometimes but im still worried. My question is, is this really normal, what could be wrong with him (e.g. asthma, allergies), and how can I fix it ot help him? Thanks in advance!

She is a chihuahua, 11 yrs 4 mths old, 2lbs 3oz. When I took her to the vet today to have staples removed (from belly) she snapped at them and they noticed her tounge appears to be burned and maybe missing some of the end. They thought she may have got it stuck to ice or something cold. It was yellowish and smelled horrible. (tonight it appears white) I know for a fact it was not like that this am. Anyway, I am giving her AB from vet but at 2.3 lbs she CANNOT afford to loose weight. This is her normal wt, she is just small. Anyway, she cannot even drink because she cannot stick her tounge in water to lap it. I have been giving her water from a dropper, and milk also. I bought this stuff called Nutri-Cal which she hates. Does anyone have any suggestion, (maybe something I can make) to what I could feed her through dropper to give better nourishment? I thought about Ensure, but said it can cause diarrhea. She can't get the food back due to tounge, & has no front teeth.
